Half way between North London and Shap? Shustoke Reservoir? Near J4 on the M6. Vernon, thanks for this, I've had a look on the Google Map......stating it's a private road tho'.....is this likely to cause any aggro as Jo prob. won't sleep!!! (Or I time it for when She & Nico are already snoring!!!)

Never had any probs at Shustoke. Above photo is me, Anne, and Carol a year ago. Anne is demonstrating the OH style parking technique! Luckyfish, The meets are great. The bothy is good cos you have two rooms and of course your van to chill out, though upstairs is often used by the smokers. The worst thing you'll have to put up with is my guitar/violin playing People tend to be quite like minded and get along fine - you'll met lots of new friends

Here is a link to the exact location of the bothy on google maps goo.gl/maps/rAFuP - please note there is no parking directly outside the bothy, parking is in the 2 big laybys approx 50 meters south of the bothy (Kendal side). The wind is predominantly from the south west so you will probably want to make sure your door is facing east. I will be there to open up the bothy at approx 5pm on the 27th. There is now a security alarm and fire system fitted so there is NO SMOKING inside the bothy - the smoke alarm will send an automatic alert to Bill's mobile phone if triggered. On previous occasions, smoking has been allowed in the upstairs room in inclement weather so long as no one objects but this will no longer be the case. Sorry smokers, but we have to comply with the legal stuff. The booking is officially from Friday 27th to Monday 30th - 3 nights at £5 per person per night - the fee covers the costs of gas, toilet, other overheads, cleaning, and warden (myself). There is a limited supply of drinking water in a container but please try to bring enough with you to cover your stay. There is a tap at the Truckstop just off J38 of the M6 if anyone needs to top up on the way to Ribblehead. Truckstop also has a shop with basic food, milk, papers, cigs etc and does Calor gas refills, and also has LPG. It also has a good cafe and does all day breakfasts for about a fiver. Also toilets and showers. I would be grateful if you could check in with me on arrival with your payment so that we can get the money business out of the way at the beginning. Obviously you will only pay for the number of nights you are there. Anyone wishing to stay for the night of the 30th or longer is welcome to do so but please let me know by Sunday evening if possible so that I can organise my own plans for NY and arrange for locking up etc. I will not be spending NY at the bothy, nor at Ribblehead so we would have to arrange for the last person to lock up, leaving the key in a designated spot. The alarm can then be set remotely by myself or Bill. There is firewood for a campfire outside at the back of the bothy but we will need to bring this inside as soon as possible to dry off a little. There is dry wood inside the bothy but if anyone can bring dry firewood, that would be great. There is a Morrisons (with fuel station) and Aldi on the A6 on the outskirts of Kendal, approx 8 miles south of the bothy. There is a Co-op, public toilet and recycling facilities in Shap village approx 6 miles north of the bothy. It would be really helpful to me if at all possible you could take your own rubbish and recycling with you as I am building up a good collection of cans and bottles at home (from the last music meet) which won't be collected until the New Year now, and it is one less task for me to do. Morrisons also has a recycling point in the car park. The bothy elecs are on a 12v solar powered system so please use the same principles with the elecs as you do with your van to ensure that the batteries do not drop too low, especially if there is not much sunlight during the day to recharge. They lasted 4 days at the last music meet and full moon club but if the voltage drops below 11.9v then we will not be able to use the elecs, so please try to be economical with the lights etc. There are plenty of candles etc if we lose power. Although we now have the portaloo, because of the high rainfall it is acceptable to pee directly outside so the men might prefer to do this. To get to the bothy I suggest that you aim for J39 and then head south towards Kendal on the A6 instead of coming through Kendal which has a tricky one way system through the town centre and which could be very busy during daylight hours due to the sales. I think that's all the rules and regs etc covered so the last thing is simply to drive safely, bring plenty of booze and goodies, musical instruments, christmas jumpers, thermal undies, waterproofs and wellies, and maybe any unwanted xmas pressies so we could have a swop shop!

How about unwanted pressies for a FMUK fundraising raffle? Great idea Carol! So long as we keep ticket prices low, say £2 for 5 tickets etc Neva Aglenn , sorry smoking has been zapped now. Govt rules and regs. Not that I smoke anyway, but outside the back door on the north side is usually sheltered from the prevailing SW winds blasting over the summit.

Vern, to be honest, the music meet was the first time that I know of that anyone was allowed to smoke upstairs and I think Bill only allowed it because of the weather, so it was only a one off anyway. I was very surprised to see that smoking was allowed that weekend but Bill said that it was subject to no one objecting. I don't think anyone would object but they may well be put off using upstairs because of the smoke. Very occasionally at the end of a full moon club night when there are only a couple of people left Bill would have a late night cig downstairs but it was the exception rather than the rule and so it's not really a case of smoking being zapped, but rather that the normal practice has been reinstated. I think that smoking upstairs will put non-smokers off using upstairs and as smokers tend to be in the minority, I do think it's unfair that the majority are put off using upstairs.
As we are now charging for the facility and running it as a business we have no choice but to comply with the law - if caught out it could cost us dear and could put an end to the business if we are fined £1000. And unlikely though it is, who knows who could be reading this so we do have to be careful.
Despite being a smoker myself, I do prefer it to be a smoke free environment especially if there are a few people smoking, and I find that it does reduce the amount I smoke if I have to go outside. And it will mean that we won't have to repaint the ceiling as often, and it's less mess to clear up the next day and the soft furnishings won't smell of stale fag smoke.
Bill has a gazebo for the bothy and plans to put up a tarpaulin on the sheltered side in the future but this will be weather dependent - obviously this time of year anyone using the bothy will be aware that the winter weather will make it tougher up there but in the spring and summer, we'll be able to spend more time outside and use the shelters, so it will be more sociable for the smokers.

Hopefully people will read this. I don't have any tickets, Doodles supplied those last time. Do you or anyone have a spare book or some of a book? I don't think we will need that many.

Do come up, maybe catch a Full Moon Club or another gig on your way too and from Scotland. It's a great venue, very unique, and good acoustics too.

We actually brought a small camping gaz stove last time intending to do this, but ended up using the gas hob in the camper because it was easier (and safer!) Has your van dried out yet, Anne? Ours has, but we've had a blow heater running after taking all the seating indoors. It was VERY extreme weather, so water ingress through those old windows was bound to happen. It was spraying into the van on the windward side from the bottom corner of one of our windows like a blooming bathroom shower every time there was a strong gust of wind - which was every few seconds! Must have rung several buckets of rainwater out of the towels I'd stuffed round the window to stop the worst of it! Trouble is, new windows would have to be custom made and would cost around £400 per window. Not really worth it for our old rust bucket
