I always use Jct 21 for a stop off when I go up north. There is a fab walk on an SSI site alongside the Mersey, so always stop off for a nice long walk with the dogs to break the trip up. Hmmm, not sure if it is Jct 21 or 21A, but it is immediately when you come off the Thelwall Viaduct northbound. If the traffic is jammed, which is most of the time there, you can see up onto the motorway and when it starts moving again

J21 immediately off the (usually-blocked) Thelwall Viaduct is the junction I use when I visit my parents in Warrington. The Mersey runs through Woolston almost alongside the Manchester Ship Canal but I can't place an SSSI in the area. That said, I haven't visited for more than a year and my visits are always short and infrequent!

When Hippy said I checked J21 M6 on Google Maps aerial view. To both sides of motorway there are big car parks, hotels, retail parks etc. Looks like a good place for park ups especially if there is a Tesco nearby.

Ah... Woolston Eyes! I should have worked it out - that shows how unfamiliar with the area I now am. It's changed very much from my days there when the Manchester Ship Canal was so polluted it once caught fire! It's very different now.
I generally just drive along the A57 after a long journey then turn right at the Co-Op to head to Padgate/Paddington.

There's a 24h Asda at Birchwood, another area of large retail parks. J21 is very much large corporate hotels, Grange Industrial Estate (loads of parking) then heading west along the A57 various small estates heading through Woolston towards Warrington town centre. I'll be heading there next month - too late for your meet though!

The riverbank is also a nice walk.

Just floating this to see if anyone going to Ribblehead for NY would like to meet before at Shap Bothy for 2 or 3 days? It would be on the basis of £5 PPPN to cover Bothy expenses, but we could bring our own drink/grub and we'd be saving after a couple of drinks rather than spending a lot at the Station Inn over a few days. Nothing definite yet, but the Bothy is free at the moment and if we could get 7-10 people, it would be a worthwhile group and also provide some extra funds for the Bothy which they wouldn't otherwise get. The most probable thing would be to move on to Ribblehead for 31/1st but those preferring a quieter environment could even stay on at the Bothy subject to it being available etc etc. Post below if interested Possibles/Definites: Jess(Point of contact) Vernon Carol Barrie Splitty&Brenda luckyfish252+1 Onion Daisymini+1 Livotlout LotusAnne Brewkit&Elaine? Glenn&Jo? Gaz&Angie possibly? Tom&Josie Edit: List Updated NB Not everyone is definite for all three or even one day, but if you might be coming I've put you down. Just getting an idea at the moment of what may be the maximum numbers.

DO NOT USE POSTCODE - the bothy does not have a postal address and the postcode for that area covers about 5 miles.
When I get home tonight I'll post a direct google map link to the bothy.
