Hope the weather improves - wouldn't bet on it though. THINK I wish we were there.
Just watched a movie called Sightseers about a couple who go on a murder rampage on a caravanning holiday in Yorkshire - guess where the final scene is: RIBBLEHEAD! Just hope they're not around. Lol

It's proper Shap up here - the usual gale force winds and sideways rain but the bothy is a little oasis of cheery drinking, eating, sing-a-long with Splitty, damp clothes and soggy dog owners.
The vans are all rocking and bobbing like boats on a rough sea but spirits are high and turnout is good. Lots of bottles emptied and calories consumed.
Most are staying Monday night and heading to Ribblehead on Tuesday. Sadly I don't think the weather is going to be much better there.
Onion is on form, as ever. Gaz and Ange were here on Saturday night but disappeared Sunday afternoon with some lame excuse about work tomorrow. Yourgurnard made it here by Sunday morning and MaryMc braved the weather and arrived late on Sunday night.
I came back to my van about an hour ago to check on the dogs and was supposed to be going back to the bothy but my down feather coat didn't want a 3rd drenching in as many hours and so I've wimped out and am snug and warm in bed watching everything rocking and shaking, and the curtains billowing with every gust of wind.
As far as I know, all rooflights are present and correct, and there have been no flying portaloos...yet.

Wow, another, fantastic day and evening at Shap bothy. Went for a walk to a local hotel 6 mile round trip, plenty of challenging Cumbrian countryside with bogs and streams where footpaths should be plus wild weather and fantastic views across the fells.
Had a great breakfast in the bothy - thanks again Onion! Then after a bracing walk it was back to the bothy to enjoy supper courtesy of Stonedaddy, Onion, Splitty and Glen (promise we'll cook tomorrow!) Loads of wine, different beers and spirits laid out... thanks to everyone. Great evening of music mostly from Splitty (fantastic voice and repertoire) and some musical contributions from everyone else.
3.00am + and just got back. Hope to do it all again tomorrow! If you want food, drink, walking, and great music/company come to Shap Bothy for the next one.

I got my fiddle out last night :-0 first time for 6 months, some practice needed today I think. Lol, gaz, what's an electric autistic - some kind of humanoid robot? Stupid boy ;-) Good to see you and Ange on Saturday, I think I'll be around tomorrow day, not sure what I'm doing NYE, not sure how many others are staying on and when the rest are heading for Ribblehead. Convoy? Is @heisenberg Splitty?

Back from work Had such a good time over New Year, even though the weather was dreadful and van leaked again - but at least electrics held up this time! As others have said it was really lovely at the Bothy, Onion bought his camping stove so we could heat up food. I have to give him a special mention because he really treated us wild campers brilliantly - cooked lots of food - full breakfast for EVERYONE first morning, and constantly had new drinks and jokes up his sleeve. And I dont think I have ever met someone with such an infectious laugh. Everyone that came was lovely and we all got on really well, the music was brilliant too, it makes a great base to hangout in. Ribble head was also lovely and quite a lot went directly there I think someone said there about 30 vans, but we mostly got somewhere to sit. The pub was virtually fully occupied with wild campers there were so many it was impossible to speak to everyone, but everyone seemed to be having a good time, it was a really great New Year, highly recommended. I wont do the ususal list of thankyous as there are just too many, buit i think Vernon deserves the biggest for suggesting it in the first place

Just realised I do want to say special thankyou to a couple of people for their efforts for us all- to Tom and Josie - Josie couldn't make it at the lst minute, but made two massive meat pies for everyone's tea that Tom heated uo and even learned how to boil some spuds to go with them, to Tom for making a big breakfast for me and Martin, Splitty for his legendary chilli, your gurnard made a delicious and fragrant fish curry, Martin for a lovely Thai Chicken curry that he made in spite of having just had some very bad family news, Onion as already mentioned for breakfast for the whole crew . I believe Vernn did brekkie on the last morning at the bothy but I had to miss that, (and please dont ask about brekfast on new years day!!) PLus everyone brought bits and pieces of food to share and drink too, really lovely there was absolutely tons of stuff. Hope I haven't left anyone out...

Just want to say what a great time we had at both Shap and Ribblehead, thanks are due to Vernon and Jess for organising and to everyone for contributing towards the two meets and making them such a great success. Sorry we didn't get to say goodbye to some of you, we did try to but the curtains were drawn so you were obviously catching up on some badly needed zeds. Thanks to all those who donated their time, effort and skills towards the raffle prizes, they were a bit special. Heartfelt thanks to everyone who chipped in with food and drink at the bothy, notably John (Onion) for providing us with not one but TWO full Scottish breakfasts, which incidentally were absolutely delicious, along with all the drinks, sambuca, wine, beer, spirits, etc, it must have cost him a small fortune. Not forgetting everyone else for all their generous contributions. I was so happy to be able to play a few songs again and it's really encouraging to know you all seemed to enjoy the evening, thanks everyone for the lovely comments. Jeff, the guy who led the folk group, was extremely glad that I'd turned up because they were short-handed this year and he felt they wouldn't have lasted the night, especially being unplugged, a lot of the stuff simply wouldn't have been heard, so I was glad to have helped out a bit. I don't know when we'll be going to our next meet as I now need to concentrate on getting the other van conversion finished, but pretty sure it won't take too long once we get started again.

Hey what a great New Years Meet. Got to say a big thanks to Vern and Jess for getting it all on. Jose decided she was too poorly as she was getting into the van on the Sunday morning and I had to go with just Kaiser. She did send quite a bit of food which was heated up but so did everybody else. I should imagine we all put a few pounds on that night. When I arrived people was about to go on one of Verns Falklands yomps to Goose Green for a few beers about 200 miles away. By the time I had got my gas and electrics connected up I just missed it but me and Kaiser did a couple of miles before I had to start heating Joses pies up. I would also like to add myself to all the people who thanked Onion (John) for his massive contribution of food, drinks, and great sense of humor. Your belly laughs are still ringing in my ears John, I just wish I could understand what you was talking about in that foreign Glaswegian accent of yours. Luckily for me there was quite a few who could translate for me. Goodness that weather was summats else but Ann said it was like midsummer compared to the week before. Once again Splitty and Vern to the rescue with the music in full swing, also featuring Yourgurnard ( Glen ) on guitar, Jess on bongos and fiddle. Hope the bongos can be replaced Jess after that little fault appeared on one of the skins. Great singing off Splitty as well as the playing. At quarter to one in the morning I was so full of food and booze I headed back to the van well stuffed. I left the next morning to get a place near the pub at Ribblehead for me and Sue. I was amazed to hear that it was gone 3am when the last ones left the Bothy that morning. Wow what staying power. Well it all carried on at Ribblehead and that was a fantastic New Years Eve with an invasion of camper vans from all over the country. Many was on there first meets and many where regulars but who cared we all got on like an house on fire. Was nice to see Jenny-p and big John back off there European tour for a while. Really good to get to know Christine (wind dancer) a lot closer even though we have known each other a few years. We took the dogs walking with Ann, Vern, Dave and Brenda around the viaduct and bumped into many more members even though the rain and wind was torrential. Oh thanks for the keeches Christine even though I did eat three quarters of them. We got a great treat off carol as she got dolled up for New Year in a dress and she looked all nice and girly. I could type here all night about different people over the two meets, so Hi to all and really good meeting you. The New Years Day night was a bit sobering as Kaiser was taken very ill. He had his dinner and about an hour later he had a huge fit. He had a couple more after that but seemed to get over it so after an hour and half we went to the pub to join the others and just before closing time he had another one in the pub. I took him back to the van and he continued to have fits through the night. At about 2am I very nearly left for home but I had, had a few pints so decided against it. In the end he was not only having fits but also weeing and pooing all over the van and it stank awful. It was none stop soothing him out of his fits then cleaning and disinfecting the vans floors and the bed became a no go area. So from being one of the best New Years Eves I've ever had it turned into one of the worst New Years Day nights I've ever had. I had no sleep whatsoever and at about 8.15am decided to leave for home. I stopped and rang Jose to make and appointment at the vet and drove straight to him. Kaiser had two more fits on the drive home and I could not stop to help him. The vet gave him something in his vein and some tablets. He had a few more fits after that but today I am happy to say he has not had one. He is still not his normal self but he is much better. He seems very remote and lost but he ate his dinner tonight. We don't know if the medication will make him better but he is very young and strong so we can only hope he has a decent life. Sorry Christine and Vernon for not being there for the morning walk and not saying goodby to everyone but I was desperate to get off and there was no one about. Well even after all that I am still looking forward to the next one. I will try to get the photos on here but people may have to go to the other site to see them as I could not get the last ones to load for some unknown reason. Catch everyone later . .... Tom ....
