I have been to get weighed this morning another 2lbs off this week, I am really pleased with that as I have had my daughter and her family staying for 10days over the holidays. It was nice to hear you all had a good time at Harefest.

Good luck with it! The good thing about this is that it should be sustainable long term. You only have to do one fast day a week for weight maintenance when you get down to what you want to be. If you fancy it, there is a support group on facebook - recipe suggestions etc www.facebook.com/groups/diet.lifestyle/

Yes they are always going on on about lifestyle on the 5:2 FB page. You'll see WOL, (LOL,LOL) and WOE (Ho,Ho) all over the place. And many of them treat 500 calories like it is some magic figure, crying bucket loads and saying they have "failed" the fast if they go 50 calories over.
It's not magic though; do roughly 500 calories twice a week, and you'll lose roughly 3000 calories a week (provided you don't overeat on other days) which is the best part of 1 pound of fat a week. It is a slow burn which is good in terms of keeping it off. Ignore all the people who claim they are losing 3 or 4 lbs a week in the long run - that is just water - or falsehood!
Probably true to refer to WOLs and WOEs to some extent as you have to keep it up 1 day a week for maintenance.

Well done keep going! The first ever fast day is the worst, so don't feel feint or push it too much. Even if you can't stick to 500, anything 500-900 is a result. You can easily build down to 500

Vern is the fasting for 24 or 36 hours or do I not need to get anal about it ?. Try to get as close to 36 as you can. Like 9 O'clock one night supper, 24 round to 9 O'clock the next night and then sleep another 12 and don't eat till at least 9 O'clock the next morning gives you 36 by adding sleep at both ends. The 36 means you are burning body fat for longer. If you can make it 40 by not eating till 1pm the next day, go for it but conversely, if you have to get up at 6 to go somewhere, need breakfast, and can only fast for 33 then that's fine. The main thing to avoid is stop eating at midnight, fast 24 then pig out the next midnight, and sleep on a meal. You fasted 24 successfully, but then laid fat back down as you were low and the body reacted. Giving that extra 12 hours when sleeping makes a big difference. You'll burn 50 to 120 calories an hour when sleeping. 12 hours at 70 calories gives 840 calories and doing that twice a week gives you 1700 calories - half a pound of fat. That's where a lot of the weight loss comes from. You are guaranteed to burn fat the night's sleep after a fast as the blood sugar is low and the energy for breathing etc has to come from fat. So think 12 hours sleep, 12 hours fast, 12 hours sleep. You won't be hungry whilst asleep (though getting to sleep can be a problem at first!) And you still have 500 cals to get you through your 12 hours awake in the middle. If you can't manage 12 hours sleep, go for 10 - that will still give you 32 hours fast. If you can do 14 hours sleep at either end (and have the time!) then that will give you 40 hours fast - you'll be guaranteed to lose well on that

It was supposed to be 600 yesterday but I guess 760 better than nothing and it is still losing on my TDEE. I have also done 3 fast days this week so that's my excuse!
Weighed in and around 14 stone or just over. That's 7-8lbs down on when I started in late March.
Weight loss seems steady at the moment at about 1lb a week.

Had quite a bit to eat over the weekend!
So another fast day today. I am going to try to do Tue, Wed 600 cals each, and cut down on Friday to about 1200 cals this week.
Then it is the Scotland trip, so I don't want to do too much fasting there! But I may try for a couple of moderate days a week doing around 1200 cals in an 18:6 pattern. The 18:6 is where you eat (sensibly) for only 6 hours in an 18 hour period eg for 12pm to 6pm or 3pm till 9pm.
On the menu today:
Two small slices of brown bread 150 cals Two boiled eggs 121 cals 1 Tin smoked mussles 149 cals
420 cals... Have 6 mushrooms with cheese lined up for tea (210) = 630 Total
TBC

Slipped up a bit - had some smoked haddock for another 200 so 830 yesterday. Stayed up late though. Only 3 hours sleep so using more calories moving around than sleeping... that's just my excuse... I know more sleep would be better for may metabolism overall.
So today
1 Banana small - 100 1 187 ml bottle of Mateus Rose - 150 1 packet of Biltong 100 Mediterranean vegetables - 200 1 tin of white crab meet 50
600 already and only 14.00 hrs, but feeling quite stuffed. I'll have to hold out now and maybe a small smack around 7-8pm before bed.

Since then I've had
Yoghurt 100 cals Raspberries 50 cals Biltong 100 cals
850 for the day. I knew it was too much to ask doing 2 fast days in a row!
You are right about the sleep. Time for an early night.

Back on the 5:2 today. I needed to wind back into it slowly after the Scotland tour, LOL. I had a good weekend diet-wise. Plenty of physical work and not too many calories apart from a burger sat night and some of Heisenberg 's excellent chilli! Thanks Splitty! No calories today yet... what's for lunch... zero noodles ? Edit: I had a bowl of slim pasta, herbs and stuff : 70 calories for that. 2 cans of Monster Rehab Tea and Still lemon 2x500 ml but it is only 10 cals per 100ml so 100 cals for that. 170 so far and counting ... Edit: I had a Chinese takeaway at the end of the day but only a small one. Squid and sesame prawn toast. Still I'll count 1000 cals for that so 1170 for the day.

I've just read through the whole thread. When you refer to fasting, do you really mean keeping below 500-600 calories for the day? My problem is portion size & the fact that I love cooking. Is there anything other than these rubberly noodles that fill you up well without being heavy on the calories?

Is there anything other than these rubberly noodles that fill you up well without being heavy on the calories? Yes, the fast is a bit of a misnomer as you do eat a little. I love cooking too which is part of my eating problem. That and too much alcohol and eating late in the day. Good fill ups, stuff like mushrooms, tomatoes, eggs, grapefruit, soups, banana, oats, fizzy water, lots of green veg with a little lean meat or fish. Lots of herbs and spices to make it interesting. Plants and protein as they say. Things to avoid, alcohol, fruit juice, biscuits, cookies, ice cream, sweets, cake, sugar, bread, flour, processed foods. It's quite flexible. If you fail a fast one day, just try the next. Because you are aiming low you'll still probably be below 1000 cals so you're still on the right side of the law
