I've been on the 2:5 diet for the past few years, not really lost any weight but just found out I'm pre-diabetic :-(
But as most of my calories on my two "eating" days come from toast with peanut butter, pepsi and chocolate, I think it's time to try a different diet ;-)
Good luck, I was talking to someone recently about the 5:2 and they swore by it, had lost a good few stone on it.

Sorry to hear about the pre diabetic thing. I think I may be likewise, as have been getting very thirsty after eating and dry mouth in the mornings which are signs. I don't dare to have blood sugar or blood pressure tested till I have at least got down to a sensible weight, so that's what I'm going to do, and then take it from there. I haven't been to the doctors in well over two years. So when I get below 12 stone which will be BMI 24-25, I'll get sorted out.

@firefox, you're best getting a blood test done at doctor's as symptoms of diabetes can include both significant weight loss and significant weight gain so if you do lose weight, it could be due to diabetes rather than the 5:2 diet but you wouldn't know it.
Pre diabetes means that you have high blood sugar levels close to the levels indicating diabetes but not yet diabetic and this can be changed with a healthy diet and you can prevent ever becoming diabetic simply by healthy eating. But it's best that you know as diabetes can cause other unseen problems which you probably wouldn't know about without being checked over, such as high blood pressure and vision problems. Again vision problems at our age can be easily mis attributed to age rather than being diabetes related.
And if you do find out that you are diabetic or pre diabetic, in theory that should mean you have access to dietary advice, dietician etc through the surgery although in my case, that consisted of my GP sending me a booklet from the Diabetes Trust. Not much help really when my poor diet is because I have no appetite (due to spending majority of my days on my backside on settee in pjs and therefore not exercising to develop an appetite), and because of seeing eating as a necessary evil chore only to be done when absolutely essential as I can no longer function, and I know what I SHOULD be eating but need help to change my attitude towards food rather than dietary advice about what to eat.

My third week.
I'm going to give it a go on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday this week. So it's 600 cals a day and nothing substantial till Friday morning now. I didn't really overeat this last weekend, and if I did eat a bit more, then I felt a bit bloated so the diet is definitely re-educating the appetite.

Well it was a failed fast day today. Tramping all over London to three different sites, I had to succumb to Yo Sushi, and then as luck would have it, someone was leaving the bridge club so it was rude not to have a glass of bubbly and piece of leaving cake!
The thing with the 5:2 diet though is it is flexible. I still stayed well under 1800 calories and am determined to do Wed/Thur as good 600 cal fast days now.

I had the soup in the end, stuffed out with zero pasta, herbs and spices, so that's 750 for the day. Not too shabby.
Zero pasta is the secret ingredient I think. It tastes like rubber, but mixed with herbs and spices not too bad. Totally fills you up too.

www.eatwater.co.uk/It's made from Konjac plant I think. Konnuyaku flour and water. Mainly water. They are not actually zero calories but about 8-10 calories per pack. Some are about 20 calories. Made up with soy sauce, or maggi + multiple herbs and spices they are quite palatable. www.shakespeare-w.com/english/konnyaku/whatis.htmlI use tarragon, paprika, turmeric, basil, sage, pepper etc to prepare a broth to heat the noodles or pasta.

Think I'll give them a go. Do you have easy access to a shop selling them? If yes, could you get me a packet! Apparently Holland and Barrett sell them in Bradford, but prob not going into that whirlwind of a city centre!

We have Holland and Barratt just across the road. I'll get you some, but you can buy online too: www.amazon.co.uk/s/?ie=UTF8&keywords=slim+pastaGoogle zero noodles or slim pasta. I think it is cheaper online H and B is about £2.50, but if I buy much more, I'll buy in bulk online and get it for £1.50 or £1.75 for 100g packet

Think I'll try some before I bulk buy! Hadn't heard of them til you mentioned them but seems they've been causing quite a stir! Thinking fresh ginger, red chillis and soy sauce....

If you can imagine eating rubber, that's what they are like! Rubber with not a taste of anything. They require a little bit of chewing as well, they don't melt away in your mouth like some pasta or noodles do.
But like Tofu or Quorn, they will soak up the taste of other ingredients, so things like ginger and chilli will work very well. In fact anything, but I would go for the stronger flavours and marinate them in the spice mix for a while if possible.
Edit:
Today I have had:
1 bowl of zero noodles (20 cals)
1 Grapefruit (80 cals)
1 packet of oats (100 cals)
2 glasses of wheatgrass (30 cals)
That's 230 cals.
Lots to spare for an evening meal of 400 cals. Maybe even a beer!

Well done on the diet.... Ive been starving since January!! Stood on a friends scales and it almost hit 20 stone so thought better give up the goodies. Now below 18 stone Just back from an all inclusive weeks hols in Malta and theres a few more folk need to eat a bit less. Ive never seen so many FAT folk in one place before, seriously fat, is in you can't see the bikini bottoms for the belly. An equal mix of men and woman with deadly weight problems!!! At least it made me look like a stick insect

Cheers. Well 2 stone since Jan is very good. Hope it can stay off That's the main problem I find with losing weight, though the 5:2 is supposed to be a lifestyle change. I know Malta quite well, have a friend with relations in Mellieha and also Marsaskala so have been there a couple of times. The people are quite fat, they are all called Matthew or Maria, and they are very friendly. I think the diet can be quite rich in fat with those flaky pastizzis with riccota, pork, and lots of sugary sweets with almonds, cream, honey, fried pastry with riccota etc

Thanks slider Well, back on the fast today: 1 Bowl of zero calorie noodles and herbs 10cals 1 500ml Bottle of Kopperberg Pear Cider 200 cals 1 huge bowl of zero calorie noodles and two packets of wild rocket leaves and herbs 20 cals 2 glasses of wheatgrass drink 20 cals 225g of cherry tomatoes on the vine 50 cals That's 400 - leaves me space for a packet of oats and a banana later (Edit: I know there are better things than pear cider, but it is fruit eh? (and I was really pissed off in Morrisons because it was taking ages to get checked out and the self check-out machine kept on playing up (like 4 times!) for no reason)).

Hi Vernon, have you weighed yourself yet? Last week I went along to Slimming World with my daughter in law as she stopped smoking in November last year she has put a few pounds on. Now she has cracked the smoking and is now trying to lose the few pounds she put on, I went along to support her. I have lost 3lb 8oz this week, I have had 2 nights out drinking so I am really pleased with my self. I am cutting out carbs and eating lots of fruit, veg and protein. Are there any nutrients in the noodles you are eating? I am a believer in the eat right for your blood group diet I am O pos and it is supposed to be the oldest blood group, it recommends cutting down the carbs and dairy as in the Paleo diet that is popular at the moment. Maybe you should have a look at the blood group diet to see what diet it recommends for your blood type.

Hi, not much idea what blood group I am. I think it is the most common one (O+ ? Probably the same as you) Not many nutrients in those noodles. It's from the plant Konjac or Konnuyaki flour. But I add lots of herbs and spices which are full of nutrients. Today is a bit more healthy: 1. Oats 100 cals 2. Low fat Yoghurt (your suggestion!) 112 cals 3. Scrambled eggs (2 large) with tarragon, dash of olive oil, pepper, salt and spices 188 cals 4. 1 small Banana 100 cals That's 500 already. I'm saving some oats and biltong for later Most of my diet day items are on the Paleo lines (apart from oats I guess). Fruit, eggs, Biltong, fish. No processed foods. What I am missing is more veg. Not because I don't like veg, but the practicalities of cooking fresh veg at work. (Minimal weighings at the moment but I was maybe 14 9 at the start. Was 14 6 last night so losing about 1lb a week) Edit: 2 packets of Biltong 200 That's 700 for the day... over again, but not too bad

marymc: As I understand it, Paleo is basically Atkins - (Dairy/cheese) - (excess fat) + Fruit + seeds/nuts I have tried Atkins before, and was quite successful but it's not sustainable in the long term, I found. One thing I am keen on, is cooking and eating just whole foods. I think some processed food, ready meals, and packet food can be quite healthy, but the problem is that you can never be sure exactly what went into it. There is so much hidden salt or sugar in many preparations, and unfortunately you can't even trust the labelling as has been proved on more than one occasion recently
