I prefer being called a freeloader than scum as I was called on a plumbing forum when I said I lived in a motorhome and do not pay utility bills or council tax !

I propose we postpone the raffle -,don't think anyone would have wanted my cast-offs anyway -,and just have the donation as originally suggested by Tony.

I think at this meet it would be great to have a contribution to a local charity as well.

Lol basildog, never been called scum (well not to my face lol) I'm kn a few plumbing and building forums and suggest to those working away from home to get a van or caravan to board in as its cheaper than lodgings. I know a few folk who work and live full time in vansthey ,as you say don't have the expense of bricks and mortar and its an option those that called you scum have the same option of doing! Unfortunately for some its not 'cool' to do this because they need their big houses, flash cars and the like, but hate the thought of others full timing w/o the expense of an house. Jealousy springs to mind lol.

Apologies! I jumped in half-cock without reading all the posts (half-a-job Harry, that's me! ) Didn't realise the raffle was for the Mountain Rescue, in which case it makes no difference which forum the request for donated prizes is posted on; the more the merrier, I guess? I'd assumed (always dangerous!) that the raffle was initially for FMUK funds - my mistake, sorry Remove FMUK fundraising from the raffle and it makes no difference if the money goes to Mountain Rescue or is split with another charity or charities. Easy peezy, lemon squeezy I didn't get the impression there would be any problems with motorhomes and prejudice at the Station Inn, Jess? The owners welcomed us with open arms when we went 2 years ago, particularly as it's so remote and they must rely heavily on seasonal business for a big chunk of their trade? Most of the campers who've been there in the past bought the majority of their drinks at the pub and and quite a lot ate pub meals and snacks, so they did a good amount of business with us. The balance was about right, I think. The owners certainly seemed upbeat and were more than happy to let us (and lots of other campers who were nothing to do with us) take over their car park, but you probably know the situation at the Station much better than I do, so please don't take offence at anything I say! {hugs} xxx I'm sure everyone will make their minds up about what they spend according to the size of their pockets, either buying drinks and food from mine hosts, and/or by making donations to a local charity. Alternatively, maybe everybody who is part of our meet could chuck a couple of quid in a bucket for the owners of the Station Inn by way of a thank you for letting us use their facilities for the weekend? How about that as an idea? If I don't feel badgered into donating, or made to feel that it's a really big thing and I have to donate in order to be allowed to attend guilt-free, then I'm known to give away my last penny. If I feel badgered, I get obstinate But that's my own weird outlook - I'm a contrary, awkward old git, just in case you hadn't worked that out by now!!! So ignore/delete/slap me face as you see fit xxx

All seconded Marie, although my personal preference would be for charitable donation to Mountain Rescue rather than any to the Station Inn as I think we already pay them handsomely via the large quantities of beer and food consumed

Marie, the raffle wasn't in aid of MR, it was for FMUK only and I suggested that we donate 50% of the proceeds to the local rescue team, as Tony had suggested that we all donate something for them originally.
I also pointed out my only concern was that, because it was not purely an FMUK meet, that anyone buying tickets needed to be aware that the other 50% would go to FMUK funds. Some people may not want to support that and they need to know where their money is going. That's all. Somehow it's become a massive issue and I've no idea why or what the problem with this is / was.
Anyway, as previously stated, I can offer a prize and maybe a few other bits and bobs as prizes, and I can also bring raffle tickets from the New Year Bothy meet which were left there.
I don't think there would be any problem with motorhomes from the Station, they stand to do very well financially out of us over the weekend. But it's not just the pub car park, there'll be a lot of vans parked up in the quarry car park too, and we do need to be aware that we will be taking up the whole of the quarry car park which means that any locals or visitors to the area wanting to park there to walk up Ingleborough or visit the quarry will not be able to or will struggle to find a space, and that's the kind of thing which does create bad feeling. And prevention is better than cure. Especially now that we have lost Helwith Bridge picnic area due to local objections. As some of these people who may want to use the car park may well be members of the local rescue team out with their families or doing leisure activities, I'm sure a donation would iron out any grumbles about so many vans parked there all weekend.
This looks set to be the biggest meet at Ribblehead that I've ever been to and we must be aware that we are in a national park and that there is a big difference between half a dozen vans and the kind of numbers which look like they are coming - at least 20 odd vans from just the 2 forums alone I reckon, plus others. Keeping the locals sweet by contributing to a local charity which directly affects them and their families would help alleviate any grumbles. Certainly in our village, if someone noticed 20 odd vans suddenly parked up in the car park of a local beauty spot, they'd be onto the police and / or council in no time, assuming that they would be there for weeks on end leaving piles of rubbish around.
Perhaps it might be worth having a couple of buckets labelled as charity donations so that it is clearly visible that we intend to put something back into the community.
I don't think anyone is badgering anyone for a donation - it was simply a suggestion that we donate half the raffle proceeds to the charity which Tony, as the organiser, had already suggested. Simples. I'm sure people who don't want to, will not do so, and no one is under any obligation to make a donation or buy raffle tickets. But anyone who does has the right to know exactly where their money is going.

Can I just clear something up too? I originally asked Firefox if he thought it would be ok to do a raffle and he thought why not.... My thought was that it would be for FMUK. The donation to the charity was alongside that. No one would be coerced into buying a raffle ticket. Simple. So why has it become so bloomin heavy and complicated? Really wish I'd never even mentioned it now. Sorry Tony ?

Donating to a local charity is a different thing altogether and should not be linked to a raffle, but done by members who wish to do so.

Just my two-penn'orth again... Just checked on WC4MH and Jess is about right, looks like approx 20 or so vans at the moment, although there's usually one or two last minute drop outs when it comes to the crunch. Tony, are you keeping tabs on the numbers of campers/peeps who've expressed an interest and are likely to turn up? If you haven't already, might be worth telling the pub that there's a load of people in campervans descending on them that weekend with an estimate of numbers? Sorry if I'm sticking my oar in and teaching granny to suck eggs, but if there's an outside chance that we'll get locals up in arms by turning up mob-handed by the van load....? It's early in the year and I have no idea how many visitors that part of the world usually gets at the end of March, or how busy the Station Inn is normally, but it would definitely be courteous to let the landlords know in advance? Plus, it's the only way of knowing for certain that they're OK about it one way or t'other and allaying any underlying fears anyone might be having about upsetting the locals.

Good idea to let them know. I did for New Year a few times. We had about 28 vans up there at NY; they are used to large numbers of vans in that area, but common courtesy to let the pub know

I always thought that someone, anyone (including in this case day trippers and locals who don't have anything to do with wildcamping forums) buys a raffle ticket because they have the chance of winning something and aren't too bothered about where the proceeds go. That said, a separate donation to mountain rescue is a good idea.
