Having just spent another day with my gran who reached the grand old age of 105yrs on Feb 22nd without technology, I came home to my warm centrally heated house with my cable tv, mobile phone, and sat at my computer. AND after going to the favourite places on my said computer i found myself getting embroiled in forum WW3. And its occurred to me that my gran has lived through 2 world wars, lost loved ones lived on the poverty line that most of us couldnt imagine, struggled and strived to raise a family, Gave up smoking at 70ys of age coz it was bad for her health, lived on bread and dripping with plenty of salt...and NO Technology as we know it today....!!
And its made me think why has she lived so long???
Well heres my thoughts...
No huge supermarkets....So it was home baked bread, fresh veg from the shop on the corner, fresh meat from the local butchers, and for us in a sea side town that "had" a fishing industry plenty of fresh fish.
No handouts you had to work, But then there were jobs and apprenticeships etc and if not, like her you ran away to London and went into service at 16yrs.
When the war was on she made her and her childrens clothes out of anything she could find, waited in queues when the occasional orange was in town so the kids could have some vitamins.
Held her youngest brother as he died at 32yrs of an overdose cos he couldnt take the memories of being blown up in a tank and having his friends head on his lap as a result.
Brought up 2 well adjusted children through all the hardships, watched them get married and have their own children.......
And lots more..all without computers mobile phones etc...just by living life having a conversation face to face being honest and making the best of what she had.....
She would often say life is too short so enjoy....for her that hasnt been the case, and she has lived and enjoyed every moment, through the good and the bad and i think thats the secret...life is for living..!!!
I can only hope that i possess some of her wisdom and longevity...
