After number 1 daughter took up photography & started getting quite good she claimed my camera, which leaves me without, so can anyone recommend a decent point & shoot or bridge camera?
I've been looking at fuji hs30exr, to replace the hs20 she "borrowed" or canon powershot sx1 bridge cameras, but I haven't a clue about point & shoots.

I have a Powershot SX40 HS and love it. Use it as point and shoot. Or preset for eg landscapes, snow, night etc, burst shots. Or poweruser. Does video and audio. 35x optical zoom.
The only minor irritation I have with it is that if I use zoom on a video, the motor can be heard.
Other than that, it is all I want. It got good reviews when I bought and I am happy with the image quality, even image stability at 35x handheld.

I have the Panasonic DMC-FT3 waterproof and shockproof model which is a very good 'point and shoot' ideally suited to an outdoor lifestyle and has a 9.1x optical zoom.
I also have some of the Panasonic TZ range which offer up to about 26x optical zoom now in addition to HD video with stereo sound. IMO these are the next best thing to a bridge camera, but without the bulk.

good point, I need to be able to take continuous shots as well, I had a look at the panasonic TZ's, they look ideal the motor wouldn't bother me on the sx40, I can't remember the last time I shot video

Both of my Panasonics have a very good burst mode - perhaps too good and I take far too many pics!

I think the Fuji Finepix are excellent. I've got an EXR 10x Optical zoom. It's really good for both photos and movies.
It's got point and shoot mode, but you can also set all the parameters manually to get different effects if you are into that kind of thing.

I have a Fuji too Vern, can't fault it. I don't know anything about photography and get super sharp piccies every time with it
