Cut a bread tray in half and it works out half the price. WVW has a couple of those orange traction mats. They are quite weedy in terms of length though, only about 500mm. Need to get her to rate them out ten, she has used them a few times, LOL.

I think that's the trouble with the shop bought ones, too short in length.

I made mine from Wikes rubber and metal doormats cut in half and joined with cable ties. Mat was 600 long so they open up to double the size 1200. Doormats cost £10.00 each so £20.00 the pair.

If you can get them for free, so much the better But even at £8 it's cheaper than buying traction mats, many of which do not work as well anyway

I used to deliver bread, rather than take the empty trays back to the depot, I just chucked them in laybyes for pikeys to collect

Aha, you lot have given me an idea, I have a couple of bread trays (I found them in a ditch a few years ago, they must have been Hussars), and I'm thinking they could be just the job to support my bed boards on in the Tranny! Support and storage in one, with optional use as traction mats.
The orange things aren't bad, definitely useful to prevent getting stuck in mud in the first place, and help in getting out but not much use on their own for getting out of mud. Mine cost me £15 on ebay, but I picked up another set for about £8 (I think) in Aldi a few weeks ago, so one for each wheel now.
To be honest, the best thing I've found so far is cheap rubber door mats, about £1 in cheap shops, and again multi purpose - they also keep the van floor clean, you can use them to sit on on damp grass etc and I stick mine through the washer at home and they come up lovely (you need to hoover all the cr@p out of the washer afterwards though!).

These type of tough rubber mats are great too: Cut them in half longways so you end up with 2x 0.6m strips and join with cable ties, so they fold down in half to 0.6m long (basically a picture of the type of mat I used above)
