The internet!
I usually use handheld devices with a screen big enough that I don't need apps. There's usually a website somewhere that will do whatever an app does, even if it is an additional function not related to making use of a smaller viewing area. But if you pressed me there is an Android You Tube app for the Hudl which makes it easier to use on a 7" screen.

c:geo
I think it's the only one I use. But not sure as my phone seems to have a life of it's own and half the time I don't know what I'm doing on it.

Yes. Make sure GPS is enabled on the phone, you have to be a member on geocaching web site (free for basic members) so it can link to it. Then you can look at Live Map for nearest or search for others.
You won't see Premium Member caches unless you pay, but most are not PM.

I think I could get into that! Limited time at the moment though Would you necessarily need an app, could visit the website and get the coords and find things? Although I guess the app integrates the coords with the GPS on the mobile device?

Yes, the app does that and No, you don't need the app but it makes it easier if you have a smart phone.
I started off using my sat nav - downloading a batch for the area I was in, but now I mostly use a dedicated GPS unit having done the same - the phone comes in handy if I happen to be somewhere I hadn't planned to go caching. Lots of people do just use a phone but I find a proper GPS isn't as flakey on co-ords, plus phone can use up battery power and then how can you use it as a phone if you have an emergency? Uses a lot of mobile data as well.
My friend found her first 600 or so just using the maps & google earth before she bought a GPS.
