Could be useful for some in the van if you have limited worktop space.

I know - it seems obvious but I hadn't thought of it before.
Of course, you can only pull the draw out a bit so it may be an idea to cut down a board or get a board which is just the right size to pull the drawer out to get the most space, while still remaining stable.

I've been thinking of a fold up flap on the side of the kitchen unit to provide more work surface. This would block off the door, but so what, it would only be in use when cooking.

I've built a fold up flap which blocks the door a bit but you can still squeeze past it. Could still do with more space though I tend to use the table and the bed at times.

Wouldn't work in mine - the cutlery drawer is too low and too small to be any use and there aren't any others nearby.
However, I often use the drawers in my desk at home in a similar fashion, balancing files on them.

alright i know that was silly,so here's a proper one, drawer are often deeper than they need to be,cutlery drawers in particular. so put a strip of wood each side of the drawer, inside it of course, and then make one or 2 trays to fit to use up the space above the cutlery tray

Nope, my cutlery drawer is barely big enough for the knives forks and spoons, can't get any utensils in, definitely no room above it.

Himself did this in our old van, very useful it was too. Unfortunately there isn't the space in the pilote but I will have to see if a shelf / tray on the cutlery drawer would work.
