Just spent a fantastic couple of days at Cley (pronounced Cly) which is a few miles from Wells Next-the-Sea.
What a lovely place, we stayed on a site (Rectory Hill Barns), mainly for Julies comfort as I would be spending evenings in the pub and she wouldn't like to be left on her own in a wild spot.
The weather was fantastic, unfortunately, I got quite badly sunburned around my shoulders, but I can live with that. We visited Holkham beach a couple of times, which is lovely and gave Ruby a chance of a good run and dip in the sea. The horses of the Household Cavalry were thundering along the beach both times we visited, about 40 of them and it was an impressive sight.
In Cley itself, there is a fantastic delicatessen which is a bit expensive, but top quality, and Julie did her best to boost the local economy. There is also a fantastic smokehouse, where we bought Kippers, smoked Mackerel, smoked Mussels, Dressed Crab, Lobster and Smokies (Haddock). I just had Kippers for breakfast and can honestly say, they were the best I've ever had. I will find it hard to go back to boil in-the-bag now!
There is also an art gallery which didn't interest me at all as I am a bit of a heathen. There is an impressive Windmill, and equally impressive Church. There is one pub, the Three Swallows, which is geared up for food, but sells some nice ales, I settled for the Woodfords Wherry which is very moreish and at 3.8% a good session beer.
Although it is called Cley Next-the-Sea, it is actually quite a way inland due to land reclamation a couple of hundred years ago. It is hard to believe that sailing ships used to moor in front of the pub which is now the village green. In fact the church still has mooring rings attached to it's walls. What is now a small stream used to be a huge estuary which silted up during the land reclamation.
I would highly recommend this place, and the North Norfolk coast in general. Sorry, didn't take any pics! will do next time.
