What is a vardo? I keep comingacross the word and I know it's something to do with gypsy caravans but not sure exactly what.

It is the classic type of gypsy caravan, I think, spoked wheels and horse drawn with curved roof and elaborate decorations - that kind of thing.

That's what I thought but then I read something about vardos and horse drawn wagons which gave the impression that they were different things

Vardo and waggon are interchangeable names for horse-drawn living accomodation.
My neighbour Warren Coulson has a few. The bow top is the one most folk are familiar with, just because there's more of them around I guess, probably because they are simpler and cheaper to make.
They go by various names depending on the style: Burton wagon, Brush wagon, Reading wagon, Ledge wagon, Bow Top, Open lot
The square, wooden vardos/wagons are less common, rectangular, made from wood and usually very elaborate.
Some of them are worth a lot of money, especially if they're original.

So like Barny's new flat top one then with the built in stage? That's a vardo? And the ones with the round canvas tops are bow tops?

Just checked on Wikipedia... Vardo seems to be a generic term which covers them all, round and flat tops. The pictures they show are round topped vardos, and as Marie says lots of different types. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vardo_(Romani_wagon)Older classic ones are in short supply as according to the article, many went up in smoke as part of the funeral rites.

Yes, that's about right, Jess. I'd call Barny's a vardo (or wagon!), though what "type" it's modeled on I wouldn't know
