I've decided to change my name (for a number of personal reasons which I'm not going to go into) but can't decide whether to go for something mundane and anonymous like Jane Doe or whether to go for something outrageously memorable and different.
Any suggestions?

Outrageous Jess. It's the only way to go.
(Sez he with the most unimaginative name on the forum).

Definitely outrageous but easy to spell!! You'd soon get fed up of having to spell your name every time.......... what about Georgina Shaw as in your mongrel quote???

well as long as its not the same as mine because I am unique in this country and wish to stay that way, and you would be daft to change it to christopher unless you are going for a sex change as well. is this a legal name change or just for forum use?

Legal by deed poll although it's not actually essential, you can change your name without having to go through deed poll but without deed poll it's harder for the bureaucracies to accept it. Deed poll makes changing paperwork easier.

I think you would come to regret something outrageously memorable and different unless you are planning to start a political or theatrical career and I remember hearing somewhere that when changing names it is best to keep the same initials as you make less mistakes when signing your name in the change over period, but cant be sure if that was just advice for secret agents and spies.

Maybe I should be scouring graveyards for babies who died round about when I was born Isn't that what spies used to do? Can you still get away with that these days or is everything too computerised now?

Can you still get away with that these days or is everything too computerised now? That old hat these days it's all done by hacking into data bases and changing details although that is fraught with problems as they run programmes to check for alteration so you have to hack into these as well and of course there are programmes that check this etc etc , best way is to change nationality at the same time with some dodgy identification that nobody in this country would know if its real or not, how do you fancy becoming Jezzika Stumskioff a Romanian after all they are meant to be flooding into the country

I've just realised you mean your actual name not your forum name!
Not too outrageous then, otherwise people may get the wrong idea. For example, I wouldn't go for something like Roxy Laboomboom.

Lol, I'm not sure if I really look like a Roxy Laboomboom, I think certain parts of my anatomy aren't big enough Yep, big life changes going on, out with the old, in with the new. Nothing ventured...

I think you should change it to Jess from Jess then you don't have to change all your bank and email details and its also a pretty good name to boot. How helpful was that. .... Tom ....

I already use another name occasionally. I'm Lynn Drysdale. Actually they are my 2 middle names, my full name being Carol Lnn Drysdale Bates. Simple!

You bring on loads of work you don't need having to change all your accounts and DD bank details. In fact everything in your name has to be changed and that could go into hundreds of things. So Jess does it for me my dear. .... Tom ....

And once I get rid of my house and am full timing, I'll be living mostly a cash lifestyle, and avoiding bureaucracy and paperwork as much as possible. A name change will throw a spanner in the works for anyone trying to trace me, it would still be possible but would just be harder for them and hopefully they would give up. It's all part of my cunning plan which I've had in mind for the past year or so. The name I've chosen is not outrageous nor too different and instead of Jess I'll just be J (Jay) but you lot can still call me Jess, or dickhead or drama queen or whatever you call me now

Well pure WC origins anyway! The Drysdale is aScottish custom whereby you give your first daughter your mother's maiden name. Don't know if that still happens. Must confess when I was a young thing I used to go by the name of Carolynn Drysdale-Bates........
