Rubber Tramp has read this I think and he was telling me all about it this summer - quite compelling!
In fact I think "Rubber Tramp" is mentioned in the book - a traveller who has a motorhome as opposed to a "leather tramp" - a traveller on foot.

The book is also called Into The Wild and is written by John Krakauer. He is the journalist who first broke the story of Chris Mccandless's death in the "magic bus" in Alaska, originally in a magazine article. It is a true story although the film does divert from the true facts a little....artistic licence I suppose. Krakauer tracks down a lot of the people who Chris met on his travels and from their accounts and Chris's vague writings, pieces together the last two years of his life. This book had a very profound effect on me and I would highly recommend it, especially as it contains far more information than the film ever could about the wonderful and tragic adventure that the young man who called himself Alexander Supertramp undertook

Great film, I will track down the book as RT suggests it is better than the film, which is usually the case.

This book had a very profound effect on me and I would highly recommend it, especially as it contains far more information than the film ever could about the wonderful and tragic adventure that the young man who called himself Alexander Supertramp undertook Ditto. I came across the book a few years ago when I was reading a book called "Between a rock and a hard place" which is the story of the recent film "127 hours". That book used alot of quotes from Christopher McCandless which were so compelling that I looked him up and discovered the book of Into the Wild. I was hooked on it and, like RT, it had a very profound effect on me, perhaps waking something in me that had been buried for a long time, and reminding me of the real value of true freedom and self-dependency. As ever, the book should be read before you see the film as like RT says, the book gives a sense of his spiritualism in his solitude which the film doesn't convey as well. That said, I really enjoyed the film too and would recommend it. I have bought a copy of the book especially to stay in my van - I have space for about half a dozen "must have" books, and Into the Wild sits next to Lofty Wiseman in my van. Stupidly I gave my copy of the film to my ex :-( I would also recommend the book I mentioned earlier "Between a rock and a hard place", together with the film "127 hours" - again book first, then the film. I won't spoil the story by giving it away but again a good reminder of just how strong the human spirit can be, and just how much we can endure, and how it is possible to find strength inside when it feels like there is no hope.

A forum book club is not such a bad idea as there are probably a few books which many members might buy, like Into the wild, or Off Grid, or various 12v manuals, or Guides to flowers, trees, funghi etc. So it might be worth looking into setting up some kind of bulk buy facility which might bring the cost down if more than 10 or 20 copies are bought at once.
So perhaps if anyone is considering buying a book which they think other people might want to buy, it might be worth asking the retailer if there would be any discout for buying several copies and posting on the forum. Obviously this involves the original purchase taking responsibility for distributing all the copies to other members but if not urgent, the order could be placed a week or two before a meet so it could be done at a meet. Or there could be regular (quarterly?) book meets.
Anyone interested in getting the ball rolling for a book club? Ideally it needs to be someone who is located fairly centrally so that attending book club meets wouldn't involve them having the cost of a long drive. The meets would also be a way to have a look at other people's books and get recommendations before buying.
I'll set up a thread for a book club / book reviews / book recommendations / books wanted / books offered / books to avoid etc - remind me if I forget!

This thread has just reminded me that I bought the DVD, and not watched it yet! I was waiting for a quiet night in whilst camping, but all my nights have so far been very sociable instead
