Well a bit of a disaster. My normal everyday PC as just thrown a fit. When I come to log in a message comes up saying " THE USER PROFILE SERVICE FAILED THE LOG ON. USER PROFILE CANNOT BE LOADED". This means I can't get into any part of my computer. The computer is one I built 10 years ago and runs on windows 7. I know its time I had a new one but the one I am on now is 12 years old and runs windows XP. I had earlier run Reg Mechanic to give it an annual clean up and it was after this when I shut down it refused to pass the log in stage. This is not a failed pass word it is something completely different. I used to have a huge interest in computers once but about six years ago I completely lost interest in them bar for using them for pleasure. I have a lot backed up but I also have a lot not backed up ( I know own fault it had to happen). I have tried to get onto PC tools (owned by Norton) and it turns out that there is no more Reg Mechanic sales due to streamlining and getting any joy from them is like baking a cake on a match. Any one else had this problem and if so a cure. It will save me a lot of pain. I can and will reload windows but I will loose everything so that will be a last resort. !!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!. .... Tom ....

Hi Alec I managed to get into safe mode this morning and I am back in it tonight on the other puter. I am running a test scan and repair on the HDD. It looks like the registry as been altered by PC tools Registry Mechanic which does clean your registry as part of its maintenance. It as done this maintenance hundreds of times with no problems but for some reason it as turned into a rouge after it did its last scan. I may have to go into the registry and alter some of it myself which I hate doing because one little mistake can be fatal. Ah well its said to triers. .... Tom ....

Some even managed a cure but most didn't but I only read the first 4 pages. It is strange how many people have got this message mostly after windows updates. I have never en-counted it before and wish I still hadn't. Well its time this old machine had a bit of an airing so I will keep batting on with the problem. .... Tom ....

Good to hear you got up and running again.
Other possible solutions you could have tried
- can you get into the bios? There maybe some things you could try there - you could try running a portable version of Linux (Ubuntu for me) from a pen drive...reasonably windows like and (depending the problem) should give access to windows files - if you have to bit the bullet, you should be able to remove the old HDD and put it in a caddy as a portable USB HDD...and get your files back that way

PS Norton is like marmite. Personally I think it is a pile of bloated crock.
There is only one piece of PC maintenance software I have paid for in over a decade, which is Revo Uninstaller (although the free version of this is also pretty decent, but with fewer features). My current free protection comes from Avast and Spybot

Hi Polly I have not fixed it yet, the above posts was off my 12 year old mesh computer. This post is from a new £49.99 tablet I have just bought. Like you nearly all my anti spam and virus programs are freebies. The Reg Mechanic I have had for years with no problems. Needless to say I won't be using it again. It is strange how they are taking it off the market all of a sudden. Well that's me off to the pub, I am well late today, see ya. .... Tom ....

Yesssssss I have managed to break back into my puter after a lot of trial and error. I have also backed up most of my important files which I was too lazy to do most of the time before. For the first time ever I have made a rescue password disk which should sort it out if it ever does it again. Just shows how old this is even though its been updated to windows 7, I put the rescue password on a floppy disk, when did anyone last use one of those ?. The old thing works well but it wont be getting anymore upgrades. Since I built it, it started off with Windows XP, then Vista, now its on Windows 7 but more memory can't be added as its at its maximum. Well back to more pics of Kaiser. .... Tom ....

Never realised you woz such a boffin Tom! Respect to the boffin. I know who to turn to when my laptop goes "computer says no" - it makes an alarming whirring noise when it boots up, so all data on it now backed up and to be honest, it's hardly used now except to watch DVDs or listen to music at home. My tablet has been worth every penny, I use it in place of computer for most things now and it recharges much quicker than the laptop so much better for in the van. And it has about 4 times the ram and memory than the laptop which is about 4 years old even despite ram increase.

Well done for getting it fixed Tom. So much more satisfying when you do it yourself!
Like wvw, I am making much more use of the Android tablet now, although I did fix my notebook charger this weekend at Greywell. I cut into the plug, and managed to fit the bits of wire onto the cable with crimp connectors. Wrapped the whole thing in insulating tape and it works again!

I just bought my first tablet to see how it goes. It was £49.99 and its called a Jo Jo. I have never heard of them before but it seems to have all the bits and as a quad speed processor. I have had a couple of plays on it and got this forum up but there don't seem to be any tags to change web pages. It seems I have to shut one page to open another but that might be me not used to it. I love this big old desk top though with the big screen and big key board. It also is housed in the box room with my even older PC behind me for back up. I have a TV to one side so this is like my escape to the sanctuary of peace away from the bloody soaps on TV downstairs. I even get tea and biscuits brought up, but I think that's so I don't go down and hog the channel changer. Geronimooooooooo. .... Tom ....

Do you know what web browser and OS you have? You may be able to download a different browser app. Chrome is standard on the hudl. I think I have opera mini on the text phone.
There may well be a setting to use tabbed browsing or a button to switch between tabs. On Android there is a button which looks like two squares (programs) to switch between running apps. Press everything in sight and see what happens!

I have only looked at it 3 times so it will take me a bit of getting used too. I also got a little case with a keyboard and stylus in it for an extra £3.50 which is the price of a pint so that seems a good buy. I will keep my eye out for the two squares next time I have a look at it. .... Tom ....

www.minigadget.co.uk/quad-core-jojo-tablet-p-76.htmlIt seems to get good reviews here. The two squares thing will probably be at the bottom of your screen next to the home icon if you have it. It is like one rectangle with another behind it so you don't see all of the bottom rectangle. Let's you switch between apps but sadly not tabs. Tabs should be on the top of the browser if they put on the normal chrome version and not some cut down mobile version.

If you touch and HOLD a weblink a pop up box should appear giving you the options to open , open in another tab or open in another page
Hope this helps
Edit: Dolphin browser has a setting whereby any link you press will open another tab

Yes that's worth a try, touch and hold a link should give you options. Chrome should come with one tab open at the top and then another little parallelogram button to the right which will give you a new tab if you click that. If these are not present, try touch and hold link to try to force a new tab to open.
