As many of you may know, Dave and Brenda (Better known as Splitty67 or Heisenberg on this forum) are storing their van at my works unit to be converted as a camper.
A few of us have volunteered to help Dave with the conversion. It seemed a good way of paying Dave back for all the free entertainment he has given us over the years at loads of meets, this usually converts a good weekend into a great weekend, not that he has ever asked for any payback.
The problem is, it is always difficult to coordinate our weekends, people have their own plans, there are meets to go to etc. etc. and it is always hard to coordinate something by 'phone. So, I thought I would start a thread, in which Dave can propose dates, and then those involved can post whether we can make it or not.
It would also be a good opportunity to post problems we are having and get suggestions. I will get Dave to post some rough plans when he can and all suggestions would be welcome.
Priorities at the moment are 'first fit' plumbing and electrics, so any tips welcome. We also need to fit a single skin shower/toilet room, so if anybody can suggest the strongest way of doing this, that would be great.
Alternatively, Brownie could get his arse up here, fit it out for us while we go to the pub!
(Just joshin' Nigel!).

you're never alone, with a clone i leave all the wiring and plumbing till the end ,then i can change my mind during the fit, just as easy the way i do it . i make cupboards and showers by first making a front,a frame of batten screwed and glued together then i make sides from 6mm birch ply and scribe them to the wall panels then fix them to the front frame, wedge them up against the wall and run gripfill down the join and leave overnight the ply can just be painted or varnished for a shower

very easy to make a neat mastic/silicone bead if you don't know ,ask.gripfill also very good at disguising sloppy scribing. which is why i use it !

Minimum space for shower compartment. Would it be sufficiently strong to have a ply board set into a routed batten on the floor and the same on the roof? And did you advise 3mm ply for the wall lining? Can't remember now!

Plus any tips on scribing?

what van is it i forgotted scribing is offering up the paneltill it touches, then measure the biggest gap,cut a bit of thin batten that length, then follow the shape of the wall holding a pencil at one end of the batten. if you haven't got room for a batten front[ 18mm ?] then just cut the ply to fit and gripfill in place 3mm is ok on the walls if well supported,i use 6mm birch because it's very rigid and i can hang cupboards off it how big is the shower ?

Tis a hightop transit. Not sure of the size of the shower, but I think it is governed by the width of the Thetford cassette loo. Sure Dave will advise later. I've seen scribing done, not sure if my hand is steady enough to keep it level! Will leave the measuring/scribing to Dave!

That is a really generous offer Annie! I know that Dave has a donor caravan he is using for some parts, but not sure what the cooker situation is.

Just let me know when you find out as I say it is new we needed to remove from our van to get mobility scooter in so we bought a Kampa Roastmaster that can be lifted in and out as we need.

All my wiring and plumbing is after fit. So it is accessible, cos unlike a house the van is moving around and vibrating etc so I like to be able to get at things if they need attention.
I did my shower room walls from 18mm mdf, lined inside with vinyl. Could probably also use a good quality 12mm or 15mm ply.

He attends most of the meets and plays guitar and sings (and tells terrible jokes!). Really good entertainer.

We kept the captains chair plate from our old van to find that the new one has both already. If that is of any use let us know as we are happy to donate to splitty's van.
As you say Rob, he is a very talented performer.

Haven't had a lot of time to post anything just lately,(long story) but I would just like to thank everyone concerned for all their generous offers of donor parts, appliances etc. The situation is, we've got everything needed to do the build apart from the materials for the units, which after listening to Nigel's advice will probably be birch ply. The biggest obstacle for me is going to be the electrics as I know as much about them as my arse knows about snipe shooting.
We'll be going to Haydn's meet at Hereford next week so hopefully that will be an opportunity to pick up a few helpful tips from those that have already done it. Thanks again to everyone and thanks to you Rob for starting this thread.
