it's the 12th of march, your tax runs out end of april.if you sell a car today you can get a refund on your tax for april but not for march,as it's not a complete month. the buyer however has to pay for the whole of march as you can only buy a complete month. so the govt sold a month's tax on your car twice -ching ching !

so if you buy a van then you have to tax it as you cant drive it home as the tax becomes null and void unless you get them to date it for next day mind you you are able to tax it for just one month

If there is to be no tax disc to be printed, there is no need to have it run for calendar months. Surely a vehicle will be able to be taxed from the date of purchase, even if it is mid month - just like an MOT. The computer won't care when a disc starts and ends, as long as the vehicle is taxed.

But John we are talking about the DVLA here, not known for normal or consistent behaviour, especially if they have seen a way to increase their income

Yes...yes, I can see that. Except...that other great example of "computer won't care when a disc starts", the LEZ is £100 per day, midnight to midnight. Arrive 23:30 on Monday, leave 00:30 Wednesday, 25 hours, £300. Your problem is that you are not thinking like a thieving bastard.

Paying by direct debit by either monthly or bi-annual will still incur an extra 5% surcharge, I will wait for my reminder coming and carry on paying at the post office, why make things easy for them? Just got tax for a new (to me) car, and its the first time they didn't want to look at either the MOT or insurance certificate, just sold my old car with the tax, saved me waiting 6 weeks for a refund too.
