A couple of years ago, I looked into hiring a MH to go to Scotland, and although I didn't hire in the end, I still get emails from the hire company.
Their latest offer is 7 days hire for the half term period for £149 for a nearly new Chausson which I could pick up from Edinburgh. Bearing in mind the fuel we could save driving up in Julie's little Peugot 207 I began to think this could well be worth doing for our upcoming Scottish trip.
But then I saw the extras!
The 'MotorHome Half Term Offer' does not include these optional extras: > EU Travel (£15 per day/driver) > Unlimited mileage (£24 per day) > Insurance surcharges > CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) £15 per day/driver (CDW Reduces your insurance excess from £1250 to only £120) > Cancellation & Travel insurance (£6 per day) > Pet Supplement (£6 per day) > Bedding Packs (£34 per set) > Propane Gas bottle (£6 per kilo) > Car parking (£5 per day) > Diesel fuel
(Non included optional extras are subject to a one off £9 admin fee)
Bumps it up a bit dunnit? Although it is still not a bad deal for somebody who doesn't have their own.

So how much do all the extras add up to for what you'd want? Seems like £60 a day maybe, £420 total... overall £560?
It still seems a good deal for May. I hired one for a week in 2007 and 2008 off season (October/November), and I think it was about £500 a week back then. They can be as much as £1000 a week.

Agree, it is a good deal. the company themselves are quids in though, they sell motorhomes to customers and then rent them out when they are not using them for a payment of £300 per month to the real owner. They have a vast fleet at there disposal, with the benefit of actually selling to the actual owners in the first place, it's a buy to let scheme really.

Yes have seen those buy to let schemes.
I don't think they are too attractive for the motorhome owner though. Theoretically you can make a few £1000 a year but on a 50k or 60k new van, much of the resale depends on low mileage, and pristine condition.
The rental ones are going to get hammered on mileage and wear and tear so I can't really decide if it would be worth it.
