I received a £40 cash donation for the forum in the post today. And a bonus Xmas card too It happens that it may be a similar amount to what 1000 forum promotion business cards may cost. These business cards we will give out to members who want them so they can hand out to any interested people they meet. So I will get it organised, and report back on costs etc. Any balance will go to Carol for the forum funds, or if it costs more than £40, I'll make up the difference. Thanks once again Sean for a very kind thought... my fingers are crossed for lots of winners for you this year

hehe Cyberbegging, Jess? Count me in! I have no pride left any more, I'll beg anywhere these days. I'm even considering busking. And anyway, my need at present is far greater than yours, it's dog food for dinner tonight for me

I've done busking. Tin whistle is good and surprising what you can earn if you get the right spot. I think would do guitar now though.

I've done busking. Tin whistle is good and surprising what you can earn if you get the right spot. I think would do guitar now though. I've been considering it too and would happily go (ideally with another person) to an anonymous area but, and it's a big but, I can't actually play any instrument. Not even badly. I'm working on another idea though to get around this - puppets!

You would sing, I would play the guitar. No need for you to learn an instrument unless you want to!

Rigg has been on loads of street collections for Mountain Rescue and is an old pro, he will even parade round carrying the bucket by the handle in his mouth, few can resist. And then when people donate, he will lie down for a tummy tickle, thereby attracting more interest. I reckon just having him there with a hat in his mouth would double my takings.
It's something I'm seriously going to consider - half a dozen tunes which I can play well on the fiddle, Rigg and his hat, and an hour at a time before moving on to another spot - I saw a tv programme in which buskers were making £30 or so in an hour in Glasgow. I'd be happy with even half of that. In fact I'd be happy with anything - payment for practising playing the fiddle!

talking about instrument=free busking. an old guy in france had a cassette player playing military music,he wore a kind of uniform, and he had a small white dog with a military-style saddle blanket, and a donation box strapped to that.simple but effective, and kids loved to put money in the box... In Portobello market, there was a guy wearing a top hat and tail, who pushed an old pram with a wind up gramophone in it. he'd stop, get the old music going and people threw coins in his hat . anything to catch people's attention and briefly entertain !

You would sing, I would play the guitar. No need for you to learn an instrument unless you want to! That should attract a fortune - I would be paid to shut up!

Keep the faith, Sean. Luck can change with the wind. Nothing stays the same forever, whichever way fortune blows!

Thanks again for the kind words! It is no big deal, really. All a matter of priorities: on one ICV forum, most of usual suspects begrudge the few pennies per day to Admin yet, presumably, go driving round the country in £40grand+ truck carriages , complete with buckets of crap, searching for free water and annoying parking signs, and spend hours decrying gifts to charity. That's almost as sad as somebody like myself living in two leaking tents!
Re the busking thing, what's needed is a strong, powerful, voice, that rises above the hubbub and catches the attention of folk, plus an almost aggressively positive attitude. Travellers and black folk have these attributes from historical conditioning. They put a lot into performance, which makes up for any technical errors. On the other hand, a skilled, middleclass chancer like Bob Dylan, can bluff his way through by listening to others and doing the right research.
Good luck to All!
