on way to work tonight, a knocking noise developed from the offside rear turned the radio so I could listen, clunk clunk approaching village not far from work, speed bumps, so apply brakes, CLUNK CLUNK CLUNK and the pedal bouncing about under my foot, that'l be the brakes making that noise then thinks I takes it very steady rest of way to work using gearbox to slow down. just been out, jacked her up, wheels and drum off. a clip that holds a spring and 2 washers has disappeared, (steady spring assembly the manual says), basically it stops the shoe flapping about sideways. leaving a now very thin washer and spring bouncing about in the drum. I've replaced with a M6 bolt and nut, I've peened the end of the bolt to stop the nut coming loose, cos I couldn't find a lock nut. be able to get home now without worry of trashing the van or expensive repair bill

Sounds like a good temp+ fix - probably more solid than original apart from when you want to change the shoe, it's more awkward if you peened the bolt. Also a good example of listening to your van on the road and fault diagnosis. After they fitted a clutch on mine I had a high pitched whistle on acceleration. I wasn't sure, so consulted the oracle flyby and he reckoned either turbo bearing or release bearing on clutch. Turbo is fairly serious as lack of oil to bearing can lead to failure and £1000 bill. One good reason for changing oil regularly which I always do. This is also extra important on a diesel due to high compression and keeping piston rings in good condition. Anyway, the noise went and it was probably the release bearing bedding in but I was ready with engine flush and oil change, just in case!

Exactly, which is why I was doubly annoyed when My wheel-bearing went on way to Greywell...no grinding, roaring or 'trundling' noises prior, just suddenly weaving about!
..Or 2+ years of driving an old transit has deafened Me!

back to the usual rattles now, one is the wiper motor which I should have time to strip out and remount this weekend. going to look for my latest waterleak at the same time. it's a constant battle trying to keep the cab floor dry. the brakes I'm going to fabricate a better solution and do all them.
