When we were out and about in the van in October we went to Rannoch Station just to see it. I didn't expect to see a steam train...
Turns out its hired by some photography club, the train drives the west coast line dropping off the passengers at their choosen spots, reverses back down the line, then steams towards them, they take pics, the train stops and picks them up and they steam off to the next stop.
As the train is stop/start/reverse it has to take on water which it does at Rannoch Station from a tanker. We were just lucky to arrive as they were filling the engine. Took some pics and this video.

needed a good head of steam to get going back there bud cool ..when you can stumble upon something unexpected like that ..nice one

We paid a visit to Rannoch (not related) Station last April, didn't see train there, saw it at Aviemore, though.
Very bleak area up there, weird spot for a station!
