Stop Me if You've heard this before!.......(It ain't new!)
T'was an old custom amongst the (Native American) Tribe that when the Male Child had seen 18 returns, He had reached Bravehood.
Following the Rituals assoc. with becoming a Man, He was then allowed an Audience with the Chief, and permitted to ask Him any question, which the Chief was obliged to answer.
So, the Brave had completed his 1st Hunt & had endured the Sun-Dance Ritual....He now approached the Chief's Teepee & was shown in;
'My Brave,' said the Chief, 'You have now become a Brave...Have You Question in Your Heart? As Your Chief, I shall endeavour to answer.'
'Yes My Chief,' answered the Young Brave, 'I have a question that has troubled Me for Many Moons.'
'Then ask!'
'My Chief........How do the Tribe Members arrive at Their Names?'
'My Brave...that is simple to answer, I, as Your Chief, guided by the Ancestors, have responsibility for naming each new soul as they are born to the tribe'.
The Young Brave still looked un-sure, & was permitted to ask how? (HOW!! Gedditt?!!! No....Punchline's even worse!!!!)
'My Brave,' said the Chief, 'At each Birth, I, as Chief, am present....& when the New Soul arrives, I take the child in My arms, exit the Teepee with closed eyes & allow the Ancestors to guide Me in the choice of providing a Name'
'...How?' Repeats the Brave. (Bear with Me.....He don't say 'How' again!!!)
Slightly irritated, the Chief expands.......' I simply open My Eyes & am guided to the 1st thing I see.......hence Your Sister, 'Babbling Brook'....& Your Elder Brother, 'Running Deer'..........Does that finally answer Your question, My Brave?'
'Yes, My Chief,' replies the Young Brave, 'It does.'
