I've never had a van with hot water. Whilst I admit it would be nice to have more creature comforts I do enjoy the simplicity and minimalism of my van. A bit more space would be top of my wish list...

Haven't seen that one... I'll check it out It amazes me what films are posted complete on You Tube too, either in one vid or across several. I remember seeing one of the Star Wars films on there. Also early TV programmes like the Tomorrow People for example, and the complete series of BBC's Master Game chess was up for a while. They do get taken down if the copyright holder finds out, but for the most part they are left up, and new ones go up all the time.

Didn't used to bother draining down, but tap burst a few years ago, suppliers said you couldn't get parts so £70 for new tap, we thought sod that, and managed to turn it round, not as good a fit but ok.

I’ve noticed that a lot of people talk of draining the water system for the winter, but nobody mentions the traps under sinks and showers. These are often a nightmare to get at and, for the few minutes it takes to flush through with sunflower oil (other cooking oils are available), a lot of hard work can be avoided. On coachbuilts especially, these are usually flimsy plastic things which ice can easily split.

I'd definitely try to stop my van interior freezing if possible. Water can get into body seams espec on coachbuilts and before you know it you've got a leak. In our climate I think it's a viable option to try and keep it as much of the van as much above freezing as you can. Laying up without trace heating is not the best of ideas.

I'm not aiming to be controversial, but I'm currently in the tent by a wood-burner glowing away and its doors wide open. Yes, I know, on another forum this would be condemned outright.
My question is: does this, or does this not, increase the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning? My guess is yes, it does, but i can't bring myself to be frightened. This is because I've been near open fires for decades. In my experience, most of the gases go up and out the flue ( this one is no more than six ft long. I can't think why these gases would come out the front. Btw, my view is that 'tis only safe to do this when the fire is red glowing embers. Flames and smoke mean keep the thing closed.
And, yes, I know having the doors open is contrary to the principles of enclosed burning, but, it is a fact that my burner gives me more direct heat when I'm able to have the doors open.
Of course, this must NOT be done while drunk or asleep or out. Sparks or falling logs could burn down the place.

If it's flued and the wind is blowing right you'll probably be OK. One thing which surprised me when checking out CO production is that a wood burner is 10x worse for CO emissions than a gas burner. It can give in the 1000's of ppm - lethal levels very quickly. Whereas gas is more like in the 100s of ppm

Essentials for my next van are; Big permanent bed with sprung mattress, Woodburner, large kettle, wet room, Cool box, LED lights, one leisure battery, several water containers kept under bed, small sink (no tap), single burner connected to LARGE gas bottle, camping stove as backup. Julies ideas are also similar in a completely the opposite kind of way! Essentials for Jose is exactly the same as Julies so when you get the new van sorted we can put them together in my van and I will join errrrrrrr them as well in my van . .... Tom ....

billieblue,
Frankly, I'm not really sure why I do it, but I think i must be mad. I like it in the summer, but winter is not my favourite thing. When you enquired, I was actually not far from Offa's Dyke!
Btw, these clear frosty nights are cold, but the tent seems to stay drier than when 'tis wet and windy outside. The fire goes better too, though this means the wood burns faster. So far my stove didn't stay in till the dawn. However, just a paper bag or handful of straw gets it flaring up again. The main thing is keeping a good supply of dry fuel. This is difficult when on the move. There ain't no free lunch as they rightly say.

I don't go far in the winter, billieblue, tend to be more like a hedgehog. Timber breaks up easy in the frost ( snaps like carrots) but lugging it about is a pain.

Sorry we just moved from a camper van to a larger one with on board loo, cooker, heating etc but when the gas ran out (and thanks to Robmac for the loan of a bottle) the only thing to work was the loo. But I would not swop for a smaller van again - I just love our new batmobile.

How's the back/ribs/arm/restofya? Im doing OK Rob but that is one of the reasons I am turning my van into a LWA. The restofme says winter is tooooooooo cold for anymore work outside on it as I have spent the last 3 winters under it, over it, kicking it. If I had had as much time camping in it I would be a happy bunny . .... Tom ....
