I've just drained down my water system, it's going to be a cold one tonight. I often don't bother and haven't suffered and burst pipes in the van yet, but I thought, well it will only take a minute.
Anybody else bothering?

Drained ours down a couple of weeks ago. Won't be using van til we go to Shap in December, and if it's really cold then we'll probably just take water containers to store on board instead. It's easy enough to boil a kettle for hot water.

It's easy enough to boil a kettle for hot water. Life: unfinished threads in a never-ending tapestry Agreed Marie. At the weekend a kettle full of water and some cold in a bowl was just right for a stand up wash in the shower. My next van will not have a water system!

OMG my pump failed before our trip to Leek and I had a container of cold water. OK you can boil a kettle for a stand up wash but hey its so much easier to turn the hot tap on and fill the bowl. Same with washing up, you boil the kettle for your brews and hot water then you got to do it again to wash up. With running hot water fill sink up and throw the plates in as you finish with them. I know I am a soft wild camper and do like a pub within walking distance but this time in my life I am built for comfort not speed. . .... Tom ....

I don't even have hot water in my house !I've got an electric shower and that's it . in my baughter's van she has no sink, but does have a 70ltr tank, inboard, with a drop in pump.i put this on the end of the worktop by the side door, and it has a pull out shower head, for rinsing stuff. this meand she can fill a kettle etc in the van,or rinse her hair or do the washing up outside.i also have a bracket to hold the shower head for a shower if wanted,

Winterised my bus this week, blocked most of the radiator grill, cleaned and copper greased battery terminals and insulated it. Checked coolant and increased concentration of screensaver. The water is from Jerry cans with a drop in pump and gets filled before we go anywhere.

I don't bother draining any of mine. My water system is 2x 25litre tanks and 2x submersible pumps. Nothing ever freezes,it is all inboard of the insulation. Well I say nothing, a plastic pipe from the submersible froze at -15 degrees outside. It was soon thawed in 5 mins with a blast from the electric fan heater running off the genny.

Never drain mine either 70l tank inboard and leave the Truma boiler on all night if below freezing. When parked up at home an oil fired rad on low,but it doesn't often get that cold in the Deep South.

Life: unfinished threads in a never-ending tapestry Not as far as I know, Anne, which is why we drain ours down. Just turn your pump on and open all taps until it runs dry. You need to drain the boiler too - we didn't last year and it froze and sprung a leak! I'm getting round to liking the idea of simple stuff. Truthfully, I'm a bit like Stonedaddy, built for comfort, not speed But - when I think how we lived as kids it's not that hard to get back to basics. I'm sort of in agreement with Vern re water. A year ago I wouldn't have considered a van without all the whizzy comforts, but I'm slowly starting to change my opinion... Sometimes it's simply pure convenience and LAZINESS that's made us soft in our old age After all, gypsys have been happily living a comparatively simple life for centuries...

Essentials for my next van are; Big permanent bed with sprung mattress, Woodburner, large kettle, wet room, Cool box, LED lights, one leisure battery, several water containers kept under bed, small sink (no tap), single burner connected to LARGE gas bottle, camping stove as backup.
Julies ideas are also similar in a completely the opposite kind of way!
