I use the purifying tablets. It doesn't taste brilliant neat but I only use it for coffee where you can't taste it. Or I use it for washing/washing up.
Sorry probably not the answer you wanted, but the filters are quite pricey and you need to keep replacing them so it's an ongoing cost.

Rainwater filtered through the foot off a high denier pair of tights (£3 a pack) does the trick for me Gaz. All drinking water is kept in 5 and 10 litre containers with a 20 litre storage container as back-up. Never done me any harm ....*twitches uncontrollably*....and makes a lovely cup of tea! If you are worried about any bacteria then heat it to 70+ degrees C and allow to cool. I would never advise anyone to drink water from the tank, especially on an older van as the conditions inside (unventilated and damp) are an ideal breeding ground for bacteria.

And you can then wear the tights like Mark does.

They're not the usual fishnets though Mark which would hardly stop a fat Cod filtering through!

Oi! If I want lumps in it I'll have lumps in it!.....What gets between me and the fat cod stays between me and the fat cod!

Serious question ~ why do you need to purify water in your storage tanks? I reuse 5litre bottles but some don't get used for weeks or months at a time, too much hassle to refill if not used after a trip, so I only refill the empty ones. Have never had any problems but it's usually boiled for coffee. I do periodically (once or twice a year) sterilise the water bottles using Milton tablets in case of bacteria build up in them.

Woosies ! I drink the water in the tank and never worry ! Do clean it out maybe once a year with milton You ever seen the inside of a mains water supply ? Our drinking water has chlorine in it already so as long as not left in the light and green really should be ok !

Similarly I use the tabs as an alternative to sterilising with Miltons. To take my tank out I have to remove the submersible pump which is duct taped in, so it's a bit of a hassle. As the water could be standing for a while before I use it, I keep the tank clean with puritab. I tasted some yesterday, and actually it is OK to taste.

I don't sterilise my water tank but I wouldn't drink from it either. After a few days, water can taste quite stale and after any longer than this then it starts to taste tainted too. If left in a container for a while then a greasy film can develop on the surface. I notice this on my rabbits' drinking water bottles if one is left for a week or so and if they're left in the sun, algae build quite quickly, even in opaque plastic. As you're boiling your water before drinking it and adding it to coffee then you probably don't notice any change in taste and the algae/bugs will be killed off by boiling.

I suppose it's different if you've got a large onboard tank which is rarely emptied and would need a complete flush out to clean it - I guess there must be bacteria in our drinking water which could with time end up spoiling the water or building up in a large tank.
It's not something that's bothered me but then I drink direct out of mountain streams etc and virtually never have any tummy upsets etc so I reckon I've got a pretty strong stomach and immune to various nasties.
Have never noticed a stale or tainted water taste but as a smoker, I think my taste buds are pretty frazzled.
Depending on cost of a purification unit, could you not just keep a couple of sealed bottles of water from a shop in the van for drinking? Not criticising, just thinking it would save additional battery drain with another applicance.

Not criticising, just thinking it would save additional battery drain with another appliance. This is my method and cheap bottled water is easily available almost everywhere. I use my 20l water tank for washing only and with careful, economical use this can last a week. I buy flavoured bottled water to drink then use the empties for refilling the tank - filling up in supermarket loos (the taps in the nappy rooms are just the right height for filling 1.5 or 2l bottles), churchyards or public taps in villages and small harbours. Not all sources are the most hygienic hence never using this for drinking water.

The Puri tabs are quite cheap. A pack of 24 costs about £4.50 and they would last me for a couple years - much cheaper than any filtering system. I'd also drink from mountain streams so I think my immune system is quite hardy. I've never had any problems with water from vans in a lifetime of camping.

Soda water is free from the pub too in most instances.
But it is one of those conundrums. A few pubs will charge you for it.
If you have soda and lime, then some will charge you just for the lime cordial 40 or 50p. Others will charge you £1.50 or £2.00. If you have a drink from the schooser like coke or fanta which essential just a shot of cordial they will definitely charge you anywhere between £1.50 and £4.50.

Interesting article, but it should be noted it is written from the perspective of someone who is involved in international expeditions so the advice when travelling across the Congo is naturally more stringent than that which is expected for the UK
