a few uses for such a thing for them as doesn't know it doesn't have to be audible,it's just handier if it is as you don't need to keep looking at it so you set the dial to the continuity sign, and touch the 2 probes together to get a noise and show it's working a light bulb isn't working in the rear light cluster.take out bulb and check for cont. between bottom contact and metal side of bulb. no noise =dead bulb,if you have a noise ,replace bulb and check cont. between side of bulb and metal bulb holder . no noise=bad connection and need of a clean. now check cont between bulbholder and van body.should be continuity.,still not working ? use the DC setting to check voltage is reaching bulb holder no voltage, have to check the fuse next, most fuses are checkable visibly, but not household ceramic fuses for example, and if you're not sure, use the meter.
another use is to check wires for breakages, which does happen, especially power tool leads, just put the probe on each end,no noise is bad ! fridge elements should have continuity between the 2 wires coming from them. no noise means a broken element i'm no expert on this sort of thing and only use the meter for voltage checks and continuity checks, but it's invaluable even for these simple jobs
