Just had mother on the phone as she has been in a nursing home for a fortnight as had yet another fall ! Fractured pelvis again so nothing new there ! We told the hospital she could manage with us around but No they know best so off she goes to a nursing home at great expense to the local authority ! They said for a few days to start with now we seem to be fighting a system to get her out ! They want to send her home for an hour with an OT on thursday to do a risk assessment and see if she needs any more equipment ! What a waste of time and money ! So tonight Mum rings and says can I come home ? It was like having a child on the phone and she said all the other residents do all day is moan as she may be slightly stupid but not all gone yet so actually felt sorry for the old girl ! Do I wait for the slow wheels to turn or just go it alone and get her out ?

That's a tough one Charlie. As somebody who can't stand to be in a hospital at any time (I daresay the same atmosphere as a nursing home) I would say get her home. She is obviously miserable in there which can't be doing her any good. Providing you and Karen can give her the attention, I wouldn't hesitate.

That sucks Hopefully the risk assessment will go well tomorrow and they'll see that she should be at home. If not, looks like you have a fight on your hands.

Hi Charlie just heard about this. Hope you have got it sorted. Should be able to get her home with some care help, would be cheaper than her being kept in a home?

Got her home but turning into a war now as got family now saying she not safe on her scooter ! Social services saying she needs extra help so sending in carers ! She is up and dressed before they get here ! Such a waste of money and really doing my head in now ! They going to get an explosion soon !

So sorry, they really do your head in. Sometimes I think they have their own agenda as they are covering their own backs and that doesn't always work with what the 'customer' needs!

Blimey, bas, you're actually getting carers?! You have to really fight for that sort of home care up here (not that it's much good when it arrives ) If it's possible, keep her out of care homes at all costs. I speak from bitter experience here It's not about the money, it's about your mum's quality of life. Mum's aren't around for ever, just do the best you can. You can't protect her from every accident and if she is mentally and emotionally happier in her own home keep her there as long as possible, whatever it takes! So you might have the odd accident or mishap, but that, I'm afraid, goes with the territory, and you have to resign yourself to the fact that these things will happen and roll with the blows. Hand on heart - CARE HOMES ARE ABSOLUTELY AND CATEGORICALLY 100% LAST RESORT !!!

I never trusted social services... dunno why, I guess you only hear about the cock ups not the good things, but there seem a lot of cock ups.
