my wife looked out the window and noticed a couple of large dogs looking back at her-- from inside my van !once she'd told me I went out and looked through the window ,which set the dogs off.and saw a bloke asleep in there ! so what would you have done ?

I would have your wife ready to dial 999 standing in the window and take a photo or two, then I would have gone out and made a judgement. There can good reasons for someone doing this, but it isn't too likely. If he woke up and left quietly, after a quick check to make sure nothing missing, I would have left it at that...reporting to the police is a tiresome business.
It would all depend how the bloke behaved, what excuses he gave, whether you believed him.
Hard to give a hard and fast judgement on what I would do...all circumstances would be different. If I was on my own, I would probably call the police or take my scouting staff out with me.
So what did you do?

What in your van ? That is an easy one! Just pour petrol in through the fridge vent and light her up ! Problem solved !

just to make it clear, this did happen, and I HAD forgotten to lock my van,but in my defence I do have quite a private drive, and my car which WAS locked was right in front of the van.and to clarify the scenario, the guy was scruffy, long haired, hungover looking and newage travelly in his 30s

Good grief! So what did you do? What was his explanation? Hard to imagine how someone gets into that situation, especially with two big dogs!
I got into my car one time and was driving to town at night , there was shuffling in the back and it turned out someone was asleep in it!! Bloody fright I got! I was living in California at the time and had a big old cadillac. He had travelled in from overseas and was tired!

I banged hard on the side of the van to wake him up,he looked a bit shocked, then asked him how he wanted his tea.i could see he was hungover,so after his tea I took him and his dogs to a local fried breakfast place. the way I saw it was he hadn't done any harm,he was just a drunk looking for shelter.

[unless of course,i misread it and the guy was an escaped psychokillerzombiecannibal ]

Very charitable of you Mr Brown. Must admit I might not have been so kind as to offer tea, having dealt with alcholic ex son in law but wouldn't have rung the police - just asked him to leave. Did he say how he had found your lovely B&T establishment??

What a kind way to handle the situation - the guy must have thought he'd died and gone to motorhome heaven! Not like that Basildog's suggested solution!

I like your style Nigel. If no damage done, I may have reacted the same. I expect he will tell his mates about you for years to come and if ever you see him in a pub he will no doubt buy you a pint.

he told me he'd tried to get a taxi but they wouldn't take his dogs, and he was so drunk and knackered, having been at St Paul's carnival all day,he just needed to get his head down.he was well chuffed to find my side door unlocked !he did make a point of sleeping on the floor rather than my bed ! thing is I know from experience that when you're in that state, you know you're vulnerable, and just need a little bolt hole. being able to lock his dogs up safe must have clinched it

Blimey! Well you handled that well chap! I think that I would have been speechless after looking through the window and seeing someone inside,Not sure what I would have done after that.
