Wandered into newark last, beer festival on, marquee not far from castle, approached the entrance, ten pounds each says the bloke, beg parden says I, ten pounds each, you get a goody bag as well. No we'll go and spend our money in pub thank you. 3 drinks each ( doombar for me ) and taxi back to the bus just over 20 notes spent. Tenner each to go into a tent to drink cask ale ?

This is what happens when you let bean counters get involved.
It happens with some pride events, cheese rolling festivals, village carnivals, etc, etc.
Community events get commercialised with as much money as possible going to insurance companies, marquee hire companies, steward hire companies...well, you get the picture. The game is called "Extract money from the numpties". Communities are not allowed to do things on a purely community basis any more...as Thatcher said: "There is no such thing as society." I don't want to live in her world.

Flipping eck, a tenner is a bit steep. I know they have to go in for insurancs and all kinds of nanny state payments, before they can get a sniff at a licence but that kind of entry fee will drive all the punters away. i often find beer festivals a disappointment too because if you don't get there at the start 2/3 of the beers have run out. They only bring one barrel of the interesting ones.

Back in the late 70's I remember going to a beer festival at the Alexandra Palace, London (before the big fire). Don't remember having to pay an entry fee, or if we did it was absolute peanuts. Loads of great beers from all over the country.... AND..... it was the first and only beer festival I'd been to where they had small "taster" glasses as well as halves and pints. Great for me as it meant you could actually TASTE the beers on offer before deciding what you wanted to drink in larger quantities. Beer festivals at that time didn't operate the concept of "sampling" - it was halves, pints or nothing!

I think I might have been to the same one, SM. I also remember they had different foods on offer, too...my first taste of African food.
I never went again because it didn't take me too much to get drunk, even on halves...pointless me going, really.
