I met up with some friends at the weekend (Flyby, Helmit and Firefox), and whilst chatting about carrying Scooters we decided to check our Gross Vehicle Weights (now known as Maximum Authorised Mass). I had always assumed that my vehicle would have a GVW of 3.5 tonne, however having now checked I was surprised to find it was actually 3.2 tonne and therefore I have often been either very close or even over my weight limit. It would be worth checking your own vans if unsure (the plate is usually under the bonnet or inside the door). It would probably also affect your insurance if you have declared the wrong weight. The GVW can be upgraded to the maximum that your vehicle was designed for (in my case 3.5 tonne). Details are in the following link; Replate your goods vehicle to change the weights it can carry

It's true that many vehicles can be upgraded just by paperwork. They were made the same, but plated slightly differently to give the dealers a range of models to assist in price negations and marketing. I know it seems weird to sell something that can carry 3.5 tonnes as 3.3 tonnes, but if someone was purchasing for lighter use on the limits of their budget, then the £1000 "discount" on the 3.3 tonne model may just clinch the sales deal. This is a very useful link when thinking of upgrading your vehicle: www.svtech.co.uk/You can also downrate vehicles which may be useful if you are of a certain age where the licence does not allow the driving of a heavier vehicle.
