Cor, Daisy! It's looking really, really smart Well done you - and Geoff; he has his uses! As for n8rbos and mr brown - nigel, I know you've got a good head on you and certainly know what you're talking about. n8rbos, as a good plumber is just expressing his concerns re gas fitting and safety. It's something a lot of people worry about and I guess he's just trying to say it's best to attempt to cover all bases re insurance if something goes wrong. Some of us are real numpties when it come to diy and for the worriers it's sensible advice. Mind you, I agree that a certificate is really only as good as the day it was issued - and the person doing the checking and issuing... After that it's down to the van owner to make sure stuff is working ongoing. Don't fall out over this. After all, life's a gas! {BOOM!}

mongoose for that little piece , you are correct in that i am just trying initially to save folk from loosing money if the insurers decide not to pay out. I certainly would'nt try to put off anyone selfbuiding (i'm a self builder myself) it is or can be (set by your budget/ requirements) a cheap satisfying way of holidaying and social gatherings etc. i will where i can give advice on self-building,mechanical work,bodywork and rollerpainting, or my fav. Subject running on waste veg oil (wvo).

Make sure you know what you're getting for a "service". Oil and oil filter a must, but on one service of mine they missed out the fuel filter despite me asking them to do it, which was the cause of all my recent problems.

He should be checking fluid levels, brakes, tyres, lights and other safety critical items.
Depending on what service history you have got with the van, it may be worth changing brake fluid, coolant, and air filter.
Those are much longer term items, usually need doing every four years or so... it depends if the service book has been filled in and what they look like on inspection.
