So after trying the EGR, the injectors, and changing the pressure regulator, finally turned to the last thing, the fuel filter. It was totally clogged with crap. I don't think it has been changed for 45,000 miles despite me asking for it to be done 20,000 miles ago, I don't think they did it, judging by the state of it. So back on the road for this weekend at Pately Bridge

I gave the guy £60 because he has spent 3 to 4 hours on it and put a brand new pressure regulator on too. But I wish he'd brought a fuel filter with him the first time, like I suggested back on Sunday! Anne/Billie I will probably head for here tonight: goo.gl/maps/ukmQrIt's only 3 miles from the venue and a nice spot on the moors, and easy to find.

Glad van is fixed and cheaply. I would give Brimham Rocks a ring first as you may not be able to get up there - they've had several feet of snow drifts up there and the NT visitor has been closed all week as staff couldn't get in, have a look at the pics on their facebook page... I doubt it will have melted yet as temperatures up here haven't been much above 0C all week and due to the height and exposure, it will probably be much the same there... It's finally stopped snowing today after snowing off and on every day since Saturday, and it's definitely a few degrees warmer but still v cold, proper woolly hat and gloves weather so make sure you bring plenty of warm kit and also wellies seeing as how that bottom field is close to river, once snow melts, that field could get v boggy

Good point about Brimham! I was forgetting how much snow there has been up there... I just didn't make the connection it would be a problem after last years 20 degrees March weather We have snow here but only a few inches. I'll try to remember to bring the Southern Frosties fire pit and some wood. I don't think HH will mind a fire pit in that rough meadow, they are quite relaxed.

I have since checked this out with mechanics in other locations who have verified this.

I was told that supermarket diesel is lower grade than the other garages,so I always go to Shell.

Our freelander is always filled with tesco fuel, closest tous and we get points( we shop there too) my van when i put diesel in comes from there but is then mixed with wvo, neither vehicle have we had a problem with. I think this one fuel is better than other is a myth, the supermarkets can sell a bit cheaper because of bulk buying power not a lower grade. When having vehicles serviced, mark if possible existing parts and ask for them when you go into collect vehicle, or learn to do yourself.

Your problem solved, great news. Reminds me of a time long ago when I was a bit short of bookings (I was an entertainer) it was in January and I needed to find work. I went to an interview with this garage near Stamford and he gave me the job there and then. Long story short, I set about the jobs in hand (I was on my own bye the way) then just before dinner a previous customer came in complaining about his Mini that he had a service done on the previous week. "It's running terrible" he said, "Worse than before he serviced it" I told the customer to jump into the passenger seat and I would take it out on test. Sure enough when it came to any sort of gradient it miss-fired and pinked. I told him that in my opinion it was the spark plugs. When we arrived back at the garage the Boss was there and asked me what he thought I was doing, I told him. "I changed the spark plugs last week" he said, "there is nothing wrong with them!" I said that it had all the sounds of a rogue plug or plugs. "Never!" he shouted at me. He stormed over to the rack and picked up a distributor cap and thrust it at me. "Put this on it" he said shouting and showing me up. "And if it's not that, then change the HT leads" He stormed off. I looked at the bewildered customer and proceeded to change the plugs. (all 4 of them) I took the car out and it ran perfect. I didn't charge the customer and when the boss found out what I had done he bollocked me. "I could have made some money from that and you lost it" Ah but I saved you a future customer I said, and quit the job there and then.

I am only going by what a couple of mechanics have said to me. Mind you there are loads of forum discussions regarding poor quality Tesco fuel. Do you know this to be a myth or is it an opinion?

My findings are fact, other than these two on diesel i had previously owned a mgzt260 a v8 4.6 litre beast based on the rover 75, this too ran on tesco petrol with no less performance than bp's dearest super petrol ( yes i tried it out), previous to this a new 75 again on supermarket fuel, a l/r discovery diesel again on supermarket fuel. Good, regular servicing is the answer, fuel filters can get crapped up by debris from the tank, water etc, they cost @ £10 to change, so its affordable to change between servicing. Regards myth or my opinion, i said i think its a myth, so its an opinion, but if one person mentions something then others follow and think they have the same problem. Take using two stroke oil in diesel, folk swear that their engines run much better with it, i've tried it and no difference? ?? But its a much discussed topic. If i took all what 'mechanics' have said to me in the past i'd be bankrupt!

Yeah was a genuine question. I use Tesco quite a lot it's convenient and relatively cheap and I get the points (when you spend £100 on diesel a day for work it's worthwhile!). There was an incident a couple of years ago where a couple of hundred cars had 'dirty' fuel from my local Tesco, but that could have been just one dodgy batch. As I say, a couple of mechanics have said this to me, but I also know how mechanics can be! Until I get a problem that I am sure is down to them I will still use them, unless somebody proves to me that it isn't a myth beforehand.

The AA man told me that Tescos fuel was rubbish and that someone like Shell was much better because of all the additives they put in it.
The mobile technician told me Tescos fuel was the same as any other fuel and he'd tried MPG tests of Tescos versus the others with no difference. They come from the same depot and Tesco have a contract with Mobile to supply.
You pay your money and you take your choice! I'd probably side with the technician on the basis he had some evidence albeit unsubstantiated.

If you do your own filters i recommend running a injector cleaner through, silverhook diesel treatment and injector cleaner is the one i use, i put half a bottle straight into thr filter and this passes through the injectors doing a thorough cleanse and other half in tank of half fuel.
