Hi thought i would start this for anyone considering doing a self build below is a list of minimum requirments to obtain a new v5 certificate showing your vehicle as a motor caravan.
1.There must be a door that provides access to the living accommodation. 2.A bed, which is an integral part of the living quarters which has a minimum length of 1800mm or 6 feet. This can be converted at night from seats used for other purposes during the day but must be permanently fixed within the body of the vehicle. 3.There must be a water storage tank or container on or in the vehicle. 4.A seating and dining area, permanently attached to the vehicle. The table may be detachable but must have some permanent means of attachment to the vehicle. It's not good enough to have a loose table. 5.There must be a permanently fixed means of storage, a cupboard, locker or wardrobe. 6.There must be a permanently fixed cooking facility within the vehicle powered by gas or electricity. 7.There must be at least one window on the side of the accommodation.
Please add anything else you might have done to ensure a smooth registration.

Dear Sirs,
I am writing to request that my vehicle registration number ******** is reclassified as a “Motor Caravan”. I have completed the conversion myself and am aware of your requirements for the vehicle to fit into the classification of “Motor Caravan”.
Please find a series of photographs enclosed showing details of the vehicle.
1. Front of Motor Caravan showing registration plate. 2. Rear of Motor Caravan again showing registration plate. 3. Interior detail showing seats and table in upright position. Please note the table bracket is permanently and securely fixed to the vehicle body. 4. Bed in sleeping position. Please note that this is made up from seat cushions used for seating during the day. The key elements of the bed base are permanently and securely fixed to the body of the vehicle. The bed is 6 feet long and 4 feet 2 inches wide. 5. Cooking facilities. The 3 ring hob cooker is fuelled by gas, the bottles are secured behind the rear offside door which opens to provide access. 6. Wardrobe 7. Chemical toilet . 8. Fridge. 9. Entry to the living area of the motor caravan is through the near side sliding door
Water is stored in two 25 litre containers secured in the under-sink cupboard .
The conversion of the vehicle to a Motor Caravan was completed on 11 April 2011.
I enclose my V5C document with section 7 “Changes to Current Vehicle” completed.
I trust that the enclosed photographs provide you with sufficient evidence to make the amendment to Body Type classification. If you require any further information please do not hesitate to contact me.
Yours faithfully,
enc. V5C, Photographs of the vehicle

Even more jumping through hoops by the looks of things! I'm surprised about the table though... the one for our coachbuilt is completely freestanding, although it does have a couple of retaining clips inside the wardrobe for storage. It just seems a bit odd to ask something of a van conversion that isn't required in a coachbuilt.
ETA: Sorry, probably wrong thread for casual chat

They will take a freestanding table that clips to the wall for storage, well at least they did when I sent mine off
