I want to install a car radio in the old ambulance as its never had one. So i will have to insert speakers in doors, aerial etc What i want to know is: If i connected 2 speakers in the back can i fit some sort of isolator switch to the radio in the cab so that when stationary it only feeds off the leisure batter??? Or will i have to install a separate music system?

You could fit a single pole single throw switch. Basically it connects the centre terminal to either the A or B terminal. Centre terninal goes to your radio. A terminal to an ignition on +ve feed and B terminal to your leisure battery =ve
By flicking the switch you connect your radio to EITHER the engine OR the leisure battery.

You could just have the radio on the van battery, radio's don't take that much power . The one in my van s off the starter battery and not on the auxillary switch so you can use at any time, it doesn't cause any problems.

LeeLinda's advice is probably the most practical. It's only if you want to park up for 3 or 4 days and play music a lot and loud you may want to consider something else. I have a ton of music stored on my hard drive of netbook (thanks wvw!) and also external CD drive (thanks the same ) so my music system is based on computer + leisure battery, but for many uses running off the engine battery will be fine,

I'd just wire it to the LBinstead of the starter battery & leave the radio in the front of the van, no worries about it flattening the starter battery then & the LB will charge as normal, no need to over complicate things with switches, just run 1 extra live from the LB to the radio, depending on which stereo you're fitting you may need to split the livewire in two behind the stereo to feed the switched live & the memory live
My music & films are on my tablet & bluetooth to the stereo, so I can control what's playing from the back, but it still comes out the van speakers

The radio doesn't take much power but playing CDs takes much more.

It was more than a couple of hours, it was all night rave! We didn't go to bed till nearly 7 O' clock in the morning Probably due to the ... ahem. And I had put my reversing lights on too because I'd left it in reverse gear, but then put the keys in the ignition to turn on the radio - comedy of errors.

I wimped out about 2 or 3 am, couldn't take the pace :-) But just goes to show how easy it is to forget how time passes when you've got the ignition switched on, the music blaring, the alcohol flowing and all kinds of other sweet delights being passed round. My naturally cautious ( ) nature would recommend either a switch from one battery to the other or wiring off the leisure battery, particularly if wilding alone in the middle of nowhere without mobile reception. Not that I would know how to install a switch though... but maybe that could be a job for this year's Harefest ;-D

Ha ha, just like last time... if you're bringing the bits, don't forget to bring receipts etc or do you want paying in Old Rosy?

Don't worry I've already got all the wire on a long reel and already got loads of the spade crimp thingies to connect. Just need to drop into maplins to get the right switch which will only be a couple of quid. Get me a pint if you like, but that Old Rosy is lethal stuff

Just as well they ran out of the stuff!
