Forced to endure mass every Sunday and catechism lessons every Friday night when my mates were at the youth club disco - the result was that at age 18 when I left home I swore never to go to mass again except for hatches, matches and despatches and I haven't.
I've got plenty of demons in my life but no god but I come over all spiritual when outdoors watching the sun rise or set over the sea, or when I'm sitting on top of a mountain it's just taken 4 hours to get up or when I marvel at the stunning geometry of snowflakes and frost and ice patterns or catch my breath at a sunbeam dancing on the river and a kingfisher flashing past in a streak of blue.
I'm probably closer to the original paganism than anything else - worshipping nature and mother earth in my own way. I can't believe that life on earth is coincidence and that the universe came from nothing and can be explained by physics but nor do I think that there is some god figure sitting in judgement of how we live our lives and deciding on our eternal post-death future (if that's not a contradiction in terms).
But I do believe in karma and tend to take a fatalist view- what will be, will be and it is what it is and what goes around, comes around so there is some element of pre- destiny in my beliefs.

I was brought up a Christian. Had to do Sunday school for a while and also chapel at school. Plus we had friends who were Catholics and we often went along with then - did midnight mass at christmas and all the rest of it. But I really rebelled against organised religion. I could never square up the spiritual message with all the financial and political dealings.
Now I'm more of a pagan so far as life on earth is concerned. The only thing that is going to matter to us in our short lives is the sun, the trees, the hills and the water. Those things are what it makes sense to me to respect, and those are the things that inspire me - the trees and the sunrise and the sunset - not a collection plate piled high with £20 notes.
As far as the universe is concerned I take more of a deist view. It makes sense to me that there is some force behind it. It doesn't have to be a god of good or evil just a huge energy source we don't understand. I think many organised religions make the mistake of personification of god.
After all the universe is expanding at an accelerating rate - something is driving it - science has to make use of the concept of "dark matter" to explain what is observed. Sounds pretty close to an energy god to me! And we can know or see only a tiny fraction of what is going on in the universe(s) at the moment. So the jury has got to be out on these things for me.

I was born catholic and went to church every Sunday until two policemen were shot dead outside the church, after the IRA phoned a warning to the police to say some trouble was occurring outside the chapel, when they turned up to investigate, they were ambushed and shot dead on the steps of the chapel, Now if there is a GOD, WHY WHY WHY. not been to church since.

Raised without a religion but vaguely christian. Turned proper christian as a teenager for about a year, and have been moving steadily away from religion ever since.
So, now, I would be an atheist, humanist, Dawkinsist, vague leaning toward buddhism, spiritual in the sense of the "Isn't nature amazing!"
I have steadily become anti religion (some of them anyway), but not anti faith. Religion and faith, to me, are not the same thing. I am monumentally tired of the bigotry and hate against me and my kind that emanates from some some of the more public figures of some of the religions. Funny thing is, when I meet followers of those religions, they never seem to agree with what the public figures say.

Talking of religion did you know its physically impossible to build and ark big enough to house two of every species on this earth. that's a scientific fact.

I think you could... it would be a very big ark though.
...but most of the species would not have a big enough gene pool to survive, so Noah really was on a loser, which ever way you look at it ;D

I was brought up by a Jewish Father and a Christian Mum. Must say after studying both religions that the Jewish would be my choice if I had to have a religion.
But think I shall stay a Lapsed Agnostic. ;D

One thing you can say in favour of the Jews is they don't go around seeking converts!
I wonder if some commercial organisations are like religions with absolute loyalty and dedication to the cause being demanded.
Or indeed some motorhoming forums with their admins jealously guarding their converts and banning links or mention of other forums ;D

is it mormons who wear unassailable underwear?.sounds a bit unsavoury.had 2 kids knock on my door at 9pm once, pitch dark 2 girls about 11 and 6 offering jehovah witness leaflets.i told them i was very interested and would like their mum and dad to pop round for a chat but lucky for them they didn't. i once ran into a nearby church one sunday morning about 7.30 where thebellringers had been practising beatles tunes and screamed''shut the fuck up you noisy bastards!'' does that make me a lapsed?

I used to work with a Jehova's Witness who openly claimed that he would let his children die rather than let them have a blood transfusion. He also did not observe Christmas but still came to the christmas do's and left like he was herding turkeys to market.
The JH's claim that there are only 144,000 places in Heaven for the chosen, but as there are 7 million JH's in the world at the moment, I guess a lot of them are going to be disappointed!

Most religions have to move with the times for them to be credible to new generations. You can see the church of England gradually being dragged kicking and screaming into accepting woman to higher positions and accepting gay clergy for example. At least they are gradually shifting. It's the ones who don't move at all who lay themselves open to oblivion.

Saw the light of day in my very early teens, never looked back since.

I think there is a growing movement towards paganism or buddhism...I think a lot of people need something to believe in. Polls increasingly show as a non-religious nation, and that suits me quite well. I have always thought that the state should be secular and religion or faith be personal choice.

I'd definitely be in favour of the church not being part of the establishment.
People have their spiritual needs and that doesn't have anything to do with politics. I mean Bishops getting automatic places in the house of lords - what on earth is that all about!
We have to be very careful though, even with some organisations you think of non political. I went to a recent ceremony for the equinox at Stonehenge and it was great - about the earth and the sunrise and all very positive - until one of them said the druids council had just had a motion about Israeli ships near the Gaza strip. I had to walk out of the circle at that point along with a number of others.

What a peculiar thing for the Duid council to do!
What is it with people in organisations that they feel they must have organisational views outside their general remit. I will support anyone's chosen faith, but as soon as it gets organised.....<shakes head>
