....& i don't mean swimming trunks or underpants ok !
Here's my dilema, i have a renault trafic & the speedo & meter are not working. It seems that this model reads from a sensor in the gearbox but....a previous owner has changed the gearbox for one off a later year model & the newer gear box does not have the same casting with the sensor in....Yup ! It's a bugger & i don't enjoy not being able to see my current speed. My rev counter is fine, it's just the speedo & mileometer.
I'm thinking that i could get an indepenent speedo & sensor. Perhaps mount a sensor near a wheel & then calibrate it. I havn't done it before so i'm asking, does anyone know if there's any reason i can't do this ? Does anyone know of a kit that won't break the bank ?
It's not urgent but i keep it in mind all the time & i'm just about to venture out in a day or so. I'll be on the road in the UK for a few months & i don't like the idea of Mr Plod asking me "Do you know how fast you were going sir ?" & then me looking like a proper muppet as i say " Actually, no because i don't have a speedo officer !" .....Yeah, you can see how that's gonna look right.
Maybe i'll get a tomtom or a cheap HUD just for now. Anyway, peace all.

Fitting an independent speedo is done a lot by kit car constructors and their forums are the place to look for suitable ideas and sources of parts. Unfortunately I went back to work to day and are just on a mobile but will look when I get back home on the desktop.

Thanks folks. I think i'll pick up either a tomtom or a cheap gps speedo to tide me over but ultimately i'd like to get something a bit more robust....thinks on.

I was going to say a sat nav speedo too. My friend has one factory fitted in her Saab - it is supposed to be more accurate than the the normal dash fitted speedos, which often overestimate by 10% or more.
The Saab one displays the vehicle speed against the allowable speed, although the latter could change if the road speed limit is changed and the sat nav not updated.

Thanks for your input. That's a site i hadn't seen. I think you're right, a sat nav, & it will serve more than one purpose too.
