Laptop using tethered phone on 3 network, unlimited data (inc calls texts etc) on 12 mth contract £15 mth Is it really "unlimited" . Just been reading about a new Virgin sim only deal and apparently the "unlimited" data is restricted to 3 something or other. Also, are providers restricting tethering as abuse of the contract? I also would like to sort the problem of Internet on the road! I love my iPad so a dongle isn't the answer.....

This is the one I chose store.three.co.uk/view/searchSimOnly?tariff=3034 I got it from a 3 store and they confirmed totally unlimited and no tethering restrictions. I've been downloading with speeds up to 400 kB/s which I never got on my Tmobile dongle. I also tried a samba sim card, but where 1gb on Tmobile gave me about 2wks careful use, 1gb on samba only gave me 1wk so I'm not sure if they measure usage in the same way. Anyway I haven't got that problem anymore. I looked at the options with Virgin, but couldn't get a straight answer about tethering

No, tried on 2 machines and 3 browsers - all OK. As an alternative just google "3 sim only deals"

Three mobile is fine. Three is best for coverage if you are travelling a lot. Key is not to have a contract. Everyone seems obsessed with contracts today. Just do PAYG. I don't have any telephone, TV, or broadband in the house so all I have to pay is £15 for 3GB a month on PAYG with Three.
I can change provider at the drop of a hat to any other provider if I don't like it at any time.

Sometimes I pay 7GB for £25. I know it is not unlimited, but Three have taken a lot of steps to stop tethering from phones, the idea being there is only so much data you can consume on a smaller screen. I don't think they are too keen on people tethering and streaming movies which can use up a lot of bandwidth on unlimited.
But yes, in general, if you don't live in a house there are all kinds of bills which disappear.

But yes, in general, if you don't live in a house there are all kinds of bills which disappear. When I enquired at a 3 store I was advised that phone tethering was the best option for what I needed. I get unlimited data, more phone minutes and texts than I will ever use, for £15 mth on 12 month contract. That seems a lot better value to me than 3GB for £15 or 7GB for £25 on the same network.

^ That's a recent plan on The One Tariff. If you go back in time, less than a year, they weren't offering it, they were blocking people from tethering to a laptop. Anyway, thanks for the heads up, I'll look at it.

I use (free) BT Openzone when on the move (usually outside mobile operator signal areas but cottages have BT wifi - conveniently!) and use Orange phone/broadband (£20pm) at home working out at £10 for each of us for unlimited calls, home broadband and WiFi access. Happy with this arrangement and, so far, haven't found anything cheaper.
