I briefly mentioned this to Vernon and he said that it is possible but obviously everybodies opinions would be needed.
My thoughts were, should we limit the numbers on this site. In other words set a limit of say 200 or 500 members. The reason for this would be to cut down on viscious or trollish posts and keep the sort of family feeling we enjoy at the moment.
Just a thought but any opinions gratefully received.

Very good idea Rob! I think that the big W is now a motorhomers Facebook site, and most of the people on there have never wild camped in their lives. Its grown into a commercial monster and it would be really nice if this site could stay as it is with members who are genuinely interested in Wildcamping and all the other things that this site stands for. There are plenty of other sites for people to bad mouth each other and Facebook . I won't be renewing my subscription when it runs out.Hope I havn't offended anyone ,its just my opinion .I ,don't want to only read about people staying on sites, this is an excellent site and Vern has done a sterling job, lets keep it that way ;D

Not a good idea in my opinion Rob. I agree that we have a good family atmosphere so far. I think there are enough of us to be able to root out any troublemakers. Limiting numbers could exclude people who may well fit in well and have a good contribution to make......it may also make us appear cliquey, which I for one definitely wouldn't want.

we are able to self govern because i feel that any problem should e aired in member only forum and kept open unless it is deemed offensive or racist or sexist ok we do pass sexist remarks but most of us know when they are meant as a form of humour and we have a ignore button so we can ignore the trouble makers if we get any

Very tricky. My experience of all forum type sites is they need a core of regular 100-200 members to keep them active. Added to that is another 100-200 who post more infrequently but they are potential inner core members in waiting. Then there's another group of newer sign ups who have just posted a couple of times and a group of lurkers.
The core members may get bored posting about the same stuff all the time unless they are real forum geeks or they may find other interests and drift out of posting. So the groups are gradually shifting as lurkers become newbies, newbies become more frequent, or the frequent ones join the core group, all the time core members bow out. They may come back after a break but sometimes they don't.
So you usually need an influx of new blood to keep the forum fresh, ask new questions, or bring in new ideas. Otherwise it is in grave danger of stagnating which tends to be a vicious circle as people not posting leads to others stopping logging in as "there's not much going on".
What I guess you can do is get 500 or 1000 or whatever number you decide on and then it's quite easy to change the forum to "invitation only". People can register but they have to be approved to be activated. In this way you can bring in some new blood when you need it. I'm not sure that would provide sufficient numbers of new people to keep it moving though. It's easy enough for places to go belly up even when there is no restriction on sign ups.
