Not sure if I am doing this right but hopefully you can see piccie of my lovely Mia, best dog in the world, well my world anyway! She loves it in the campervan and i often see people taking a second look and smiling as we drive past with Mia in the passenger seat! She's 6 now and I have had her since she was nearly 2 she was a rescue dog, she was much loved but her owner couldnt walk and had never taken her out, she had only been out in the back garden, consequently when I first got her she chased everything... and i mean everything.. cats, dogs, children. bikes, joggers, sheep, birds.... you name it, if it moved she would chase it! But now she is soooo good, I can trust her anywhere and she always comes back when called, she is an absolute joy, really no trouble, plus she keeps me fit! Attachments:

She's blue merle border collie crossed with terrier, though both her parents were blue merls, and her litter brother is proper silky black and white border collie. Apparently you're not supposed to breed from 2 blue merls as puppies are ususally born dead, but vet said she has def got terrier in her, got wirey coat and a bit of a beard going on!

Collie crosses can be great dogs as they usually have the best of both breeds - sometimes though that collie brain can be hard to keep in check especially when combined with another strong feature such as the labrador appetite, the terrier stubborness and determination, the spaniel energy etc.
Mia looks lovely, and I can imagine you had your hands full when you first took her in but she looks so relaxed but alert, and happy in the photo that she has obviously got the best home in the world for her.
I always think that female dogs of whiskery breeds just look so wrong though - no offence to Mia, but I'd be sooooooo tempted to cut those whiskery beardy bits off :-) My mum's little corgi jack is the same, she is the sweetest little girly thing and her whiskers just look so wrong on her!

Aww no I couldnt do that to her, they are part of her character, and she might be cold! she's not too bad, not a full blown beard , more a hint of whiskers going on! Yeah she is a great mix, got the collie herding instinct and the terrier finish - it off one! She is very quick, has caught 2 squirels and always hopeful of more! But VERY stubborn with sticks, LOVES to chase them and will bring them back relentlessly - but will she drop it?? Trick is to get another one so she drops first! But many a time she has gone home with 3 sticks in her mouth!!

Find something she likes more than sticks to give her as a reward for fetching a stick back and she can have her rewardin return for giving up the stick, and then harness that habit and before long you will have a firewood collecting dog :-) Simples! (To quote our Snowmongoose)

My first collie was stick mad but I've tried not to let Rigg chase sticks being thrown because of the risk of injury. But he does like to help unload a van full of logs and to carry wood collected on walks. I give him logs which are too heavy for me and he brings them back proudly. The next job is the train him not too drop them on my feet :-)

She looks lovely, and its a big well done to you for you taking her on under such circumstances.
Its great to know that you've developed such a bond with her. We don't recommend chasing thrown sticks though, we have heard of some very nasty injuries they cause if you run on to one. Murphy hurt his mouth when he dived on a stick being held by someone - never mind being thrown. He yelped loudly and ran off :-( Luckily no damage done, but a lesson learnt.

what a gorgeous dog Anne!
i guess sticks can harm dogs but then its like closing down the school when it snows because the poor children might slip or making them wear protective goggles when playing conkers. we always seemed to manage without slipping too much or goggles 30 years ago. we have to get out of bed and we have to cross the road. dogs have always loved sticks and always will.

Thanks for the comments about Mia, very nice to read! Yes she was hard work at first, also couldnt go down stairs as had lived in a bungalow, could go up them OK, and theres 4 flights in mine of steep narow stairs, she used to go all the way up to the attic then stand at the top step trembling, and I used to have to carry her all the way down!

Lovely introduction of Mia. I hope to get to meet her one day. You've done a great job to turn her around. It can be hard work, but it's always worth it in the end. It's such a shame when people get breeds that are not appropriate for their lifestyles. Collies (and their crosses) can suffer terribly as they can be very sensitive. Well done for giving her a great new life

Thankyou winddancer, very nice of you to say so. I completely agree about appropriate and inapropriate owners for dogs, and yes, border collies are particularly vulnerable as they are so intelligent and need a lot of exercise, but very much worth itin the end, Mia is really a different dog now. She met Whitevan womans dog, Rigg. at New Year and they got on really well, I will post some piccies when I get a minute

Mia is a lovely dog. Went for a walk with her and Anne this morning.
Mia and Rigg did get on very well, but Mia would not let Rigg have his ball or frisbee back. She was showing her terrier cross instincts holding on to it and guarding them. Rigg was quite at a loss where his toys had gone!
