Not on the camper, the house! Neil knocked me sideways yesterday by signing up for 10 solar roof panels and something called Midnight Sun - gell battery installation which will run the house electrics off-grid. Has anyone else gone down this route? Hope he's done the right thing! Life: unfinished threads in a never-ending tapestry

Good idea! At least you should have enough light to brush your hair.

Do you get any sun up there? Yes, lots We had hardly any rain at all this summer, sarky Moon, and, believe it or not, Northumberland is noted for being one of the driest counties in the country Life: unfinished threads in a never-ending tapestry

Very intereting Marie, so is the plan to be completely off grid or will you be able to tap in the grid if needs be but reuce costs? I think its a brilliant idea - renewabe resources etc and with the costs of electricity soaring - to cover the costs of the smart meters? - it sounds like good sense to me. Don't know if I would want to be managing battery top ups and storage though without a backup supply...tell us more!

I will tell you more when all done and dusted as I'm not too sure myself and is very techie! - panels to be installed before Christmas, gel battery in New Year. It is not cheap (15k) but is better use on Neil's inheritance money than premium bonds. Would still rather have had a better (newer) camper instead Life: unfinished threads in a never-ending tapestry

Another thing - if you sell your house in the meantime you take the payback tariff with you and it continues to be paid to you. Unless you choose to sell it to the new owners.
It's a really mad scheme and I can see why all the rich folk with big houses were the first to get their house roofs plastered with loads of panels! The more kilowatts you generate, the more you get paid. As they were the first in they got a much higher payback tariff, but then the equipment was much more expensive back then, so a bit swings and roundabouts.

Worse case scenario will payback about £1,200 per year, but should be a fair bit more than than. It's also index linked and protected for 20 years.
Way better than 3% or less in a savings/bank account!

Do not know your job but really check prices as a lot of cowboys in that game ! I know. It depends on how many panels you have and the quality - these are guaranteed for 20 years regardless of whether the installers go bust or not, Was he installing the gel batteries as well for self-contained power? Not all installations have them, some just install the panels to feed into the grid and take the payback tariff. The gel batteries give you the ability to be virtually self-sufficient from the grid and you get the payback tariff regardless. That's what seems so mad about it! Fancy wasting 15k on saving the planet when you could have bought a Unimog to destroy it with. (well a downpayment on one anyway!).
