I am currently converting a Citroen Dispatch as a small camper. It has an old battery in it, and as it had not been run for several months, it was completely flat, wouldn't even light any of the dashboard lights. About a fortnight ago, I went to charge it, left it on overnight, reinstalled it, turned the key and.............nothing, just a faint glimmer from the dashboard.
Right, sez I, new battery required. It being old and I have read many times that if you fully discharge a battery you do untold damage. Hold on, sez oldest son, we'll recondition it. What? sez I.
Apparently on the charger, there is a switch for 'reconditioning', we switched it to this, left it on overnight again and reinstalled it.
In the morning I turned the key, and Wow! full of power and started first time. I drove it to a local garage to get a steering problem fixed, picked it up the next day, and still full of power.
It has now sat on the drive for a couple of weeks, and we have had a couple of frosts, so this morning, when I went out to try it, I was fearing the worst, but no, still full of power!
Can anybody explain the science? Have I thrown away batteries in the past when there was no need?

Can anybody explain the science? Have I thrown away batteries in the past when there was no need? It's to do with deposits of lead sulphate on the plates. It's a hard deposit which can't accept charge. You can break some of it up with rejuvenation but I don't think you can get all the capacity back - I may be wrong on that.
