is it true that some unlimited band width suppliers stop you using it to run other things ie run a pc off your mobile phone tether

No ,the nearest area is Southampton ,nothing in Bournemouth yet The 5 is amazing after the 3, much better camera, with flash ( so you can have the torch app) ;D and it works much quicker as well.

Still haven't signed up for Samba yet using the link you sent me, had forgotten, this thread has just reminded me, thanks!
My android (ice cream sandwich which I think is the most up to date version of OS) has hotspot function so will try it out this weekend, samba will be useful for dongle if I use up free data allowance with mobile contract.
Have been thinking about mi-fi but not sure I'll really need it if hotspot function works well.

I keep meaning to get a Samba, but have not got round to it yet. It was one of Mini's suggestions.

Get a referral link from someone - you'll get a discount off the sim and you'll both get free credit.

Just a thought... do you use more data than you would earn to watch Samba videos if you weren't using wifi / home broadband?

I use a pile of data 5-7 GB a month. So, that's no doubt a lot more than I could build up on Samba. I try to use Openzone where I can, but it can be unreliable and drop off even when you have a signal.

I'm happy to do a referral too if anyone wants one. I've currently got 2.6GB on my Samba but haven't used it much lately. I don't think there's a limit as to how much data you can clock up by watching ads... and it never expires. It would need dedication to earn 5-7 GB per month but would still be a useful free backup if BT wifi doesn't deliver. Lolly and Ocelot... I'm told you don't use up your data allowance whilst watching ads, so it won't get you into a vicious circle I'm getting so confused with all the new names... must be an age thing

Yes mini it doesn't seem to expire,I've nearly managed to build up 1G in a month and using the mifi a couple of times a week. The longest advert I've had was 5 mins

I got my sim last week, it arrived next day and I got 700 mb already which is more than my pay monthly vodafone allowance of 500mb which I've never yet used up so between samba for laptop and vodafone for mobile I'm covered hopefully. Using my home wifi, I have probably watched all available ads on 5 days since getting the sim, haven't yet tried watching ads using the Samba sim and probably won't bother unless I get very low on credit. There is a finite number of ads you can watch each day, seems to be around approx 100mb worth of data, sometimes a bit more. You can watch some ads several times, especially the Frank ads, which are only 30 secs so worth watching. I keep the samba window open with ads running but volume muted whilst on FB, checking email etc and just keep flicking back and forth to start ads. There are one or two (mainly the games or film ads) which can be much longer, 4, 6 or even 12 mins, you'll get to know which ones to leave till last and which ones are the short ones and worth doing first. I wouldn't rely on it on it's own but it's definitely worth having as a back up to a smart phone allowance if it's not going to be for daily use, ie as the main form of internet access if wanting to watch videos, stream music / radio etc. It uses the 3 network (and I seem to think that 3 and O2 have just agreed to share transmitters which should improve the already good 3 network) which is said to be the best mobile internet provider network. It's worth reading the Samba FAQs and forum for more info.

I think you're right about Orange and Three. In fact Basildog told me at Xmas that Three can use Orange masts, but under the network settings tab on the modem software you have search for 3G networks and then "manually select" Orange network if there's one shown and no Three in that area. It's worth remembering for Three users (presumably Orange modem users can do vice versa).

I was talking about O2 and 3, not orange.
Orange has partnered with T-mobile.
I doubt the regulator would allow a further merger for Orange with another large network due to risk of monopoly. Can't be arsed googling to see whether I'm right or wrong though.

Maybe Basildog meant O2... I'm sure he told me Orange. I've been wrong before though!
I nearly always get a Three signal, and I've not so far had success finding any other 3G network in places where there isn't a Three signal. However, there's bound to be some rural spots dotted around where this is the case.

No 3 signal at my house! Transmitter only about a mile away but the contours of the fells block the signal. Vodafone mast is on railway line so a decent signal. Lots of places in the north of the country where signal from any network is poor, or there is only one network available, due to the lack of transmitters compared to the south, same in alot of other remote areas. You spend majority of your time in urban areas, and so there is probably a decent signal for every network. 3 reckons it has 90+% coverage but sometimes the coverage is so weak that it is too slow to do much. Lots of the places I go don't have any mobile signal - which is why I go there!

I tried a T-Mobile dongle (may have been Virgin branded) about 2 years back and it wasn't a patch on 3. There's also quite a lot of very rural areas in the south, and while in urban areas both networks are present, the 3 was miles better in the rural ones (that I tried). Things may have changed now though, as 2 years is a lot in mobile comms terms when they are rolling out new coverage all the time Then, confusingly there is this: www.ispreview.co.uk/story/2010/09/02/orange-uk-joins-3-and-t-mobile-in-3g-mobile-broadband-network-share.htmland Wikipedia lists 3 and O2 has having a previous partnering arrangement. So all in all I'm just

It's funny because I was told last year (in an o2 store) that o2 and Vodafone are due to start sharing transmitters soon but maybe the deal fell through and they went with 3 instead? Wouldn't it just make perfect sense if they all shared? Moonshadow and I have had Samba sims since last summer/autumn (she recommended me) and I've got nothing but good things to say about them - brilliant. I've got mine in the iPad but recently sent off for another in Martin's name for our 3 mifi unit... works a treat. We sit there like bookends on double-data days, racking up the MBs

mifi is not a lot of use abroad as the sims are a silly price for data. McDoughnuts is your best bet as well as some supermarkets and sports stadiums and you can get that with any wifi receiving lappy. Though I do believe the mifi as it acts as a repeater so may just increase your range if you site it correctly.
