Does anyone know if this applies to 25+ year old camper vans?

I think you'll find that the DVLA stopped the tax exemption on old vechiles some time ago. They now have a flat rate on the size of the engine on older vechiles when they don't conform to the new emission regulations.

Sure it's only pre 1971 vehicles that are tax free.

I thought it was 25 years. Mine was registered in 1991. Anyway it looks like I won't be popping a bottle of Asti Spumantie

nope it's pre Jan 1st 1973, it used to be 25 years old, but the government realised that modern"ish" cars could easily last 25 years, it all changed in '98, the only reason I know is because back in '99 my escort was deemed to be built 3 days after the cut off date, but after a bit of wrangling with owners clubs etc we proved it was "manufactured" before the cut off date, so got free tax, the manufactured date is the important one, a friend had a '76 registered car, but proved it was manufactured in '72, so got the free tax

The DVL website don't mention campers but I would have thought that it applies to any wehicle that has previously been taxed.

and if anyone wants a tax exempt self build project I have a 1968 series 11A 109 hard top landrover for sale at the silly price of £700 and that includes loads of new parts, it is a 2.5 diesel with salisbury back axle (Bigger brakes) Fairy over drive and freewheel hubs, (16 forward gears and 4 reverse) a real go anywhere vehicle. shove a demountable on the back an really cheap motorhoming. 30 mpg. some welding needed but most of it sorted, just don't have the time or back for it any more.
