I currently have a vw t4 with 145 on the clock. Don't love the van layout but it drives really well and is economical. I do love VW 's and have always had one. Had promised myself an upgrade which would probably not be a vw cos they are usually more expensive.
But, saw this van on ebay which is a t4 - I would prefer to stay small - with a fab layout , heating and quality refurb but it's actually older than the one I've got and has 131 on a recon engine. The seller has offered to take my van in part exchange which saves me the hassle of selling. Should I go with it or look for a newer model as I'd planned? I'm also wanting to move house and could do with reserving funds.
Any opinion welcome!!

Any link to the other van? I know what you mean about T4's,we loved ours but needed something bigger.Whats the condition of your van and how long have you owned it.What I mean is ,if you've owned it a few years your know the history of it,parts bought ,reliablily etc. What engine do you have,an older van will probably be non turboed. If your happy with your van then why not do a re fit and get the layout you want.Without looking at it you can probably reuse some or most of it.Adding a heater is not massively expensive.
Mend and make do,thn you can move and still have a van!!

it has 131 on a recon engine? How many miles in total then? or if that's the total, how many miles has the recon done? Ask to see receipts for the recon work & ask exactly what's been done, I've reconned a few of my own engines, but as there are no receipts for the work carried out, just for the parts it mean nothing to anyone else, after all the parts could have been bought for anone. In my opinion the mileage isn't an issue as long as it's been looked after, I'd say the age compensates for the mileage. Are you being offered a very good deal? I'd be expecting to pay very little in cash on the deal, if it's an almost like for like, or as Ellisboy says, just have yours refitted if it's only the layout that you don't like, better the devil you know.

Mileage generally does not matter on a diesel engine. Is it diesel or petrol?
I'd expect about 300,000 - 400,000 out of a diesel engine and 150,000 to 200,000 put of a petrol one. But a lot depends on revs of course. 100,000 miles thrashing around in 2 and 3 gear is equal to 200,000 coasting in 5th or 6th
I prefer to see a van that has been reasonably used.
I'm very suspicious of all these low mileage deals where someone has had a van for 12 years and it has only done 20,000 miles. That means the van has been standing around on a driveway in the rain most of the time which is not good for the vehicle. They need to be driven and used to keep the systems in order and air under body etc.
