OK - which members play instruments or sing or perform in any way? Would be kind of nice to know how much talent there is sloshing around the forum (well, it sloshes with beer when Rob's on the old Doombar... Just to start the ball rolling, I play English Concertina, but I'm afraid I can only sing like a strangled cat, therefore I don't! ;D

Just say I had a great time jamming along with Marie and her partner Neil and Whitevanwoman too over New Year. She's a whizz on the concertina and her singing is nice too I play the violin to about grade 5 standard (do they still do grades??) and have played in a few orchestras - which was sometimes a struggle as I tend to play along to my own rhythms, not necessarily the same as the rest of the group. I taught myself guitar to which I can do some classical, play along with basic chords to other people's stuff, and sing along badly to some folk/rock numbers. I also taught myself the tin whistle and can play many folk tunes on that. Thankfully that one means I can't sing at the same time! I can also pick out a few tunes and chords on the keyboard, but that doesn't really count.

I have played most Brass instruments but favour Tubas, prefer EEflat and A as well as Euphonium. Used to play for Breckland Brass 1st tuba, misconstrued. Exmouth concert 2nd Tuban X. Last played for Calais Town Brass solo and first Tuba, up till two years ago. ad to give up due to my COPD. now playing a record player only and that is a problem sometimes with my hearing impediment. ;D Thinking of taking up Irish harp in a bid to get ready for the here after. By the way I was an Army Band boy at 15 under the famous Sidney Ord-Hume, but left that at 17 to be a proper soldier.

This will sound odd, but I have never played music with random musicians...would like to try it some time. My approach has tended to be a rather bookish or just for myself...

Come along to a meet sometime Polly. We may have some more music ones this year. I can read music OK having done all the orchestral stuff, but last weekend we were just establishing the key and doing I IV V7 and VIm.
Or one can just do I and V .... if you make a noise and it's roughly in key, who cares!! If it's guitar I like C (or G if you really push me). WVW had written her own composition "Spirits" in Gmin, so that one threw me a bit, I think I was playing Gmaj instead but is sounded vaguely OK

Me too I have been somewhat institutionalised in music all my life as was always taught Busking is bad. So tend to just play from dots I did once sit in on string bass with a Trad jazz group in a pub as their bass player hadn't turned up. also had the pleasure of playing a sousaphone for the first time ever, with the famous Umpa Band at a (dare I say it) Holiday Camp.

@firefox...make that I IV V and VIm and you have just one of the most common chord progressions in the business. www.youtube.com/watch?v=oOlDewpCfZQThe seventh must give a slightly bluesy feel?

I tend to use V7 at the end and G7 is quicker to play than G that's my excuse!
In some artists eg Beetles same those chords are used in many orders.
One of faves is Hallellujah by Cohen and that goes
I VIm I VIm IV V I V I IV V VIm IV V IIIm VIm x2
Chorus: IVx 2 VImx2 IVx2 Ix2
All I need to do is learn 6 versus of lyrics !!

Ah, was the other side of the coin for me. I learned to read music when I was a kid, then never read a note since I was 14. It was frowned upon by my musical peers to play other peoples music. Especially reading it from a book. (After all most of us were experimental hippies at the time) Apart from the odd jam sliding into an occasional cover, it has always had to be original for me. Have had a recording studio on and off since the 80s, produced a few albums for local bands and made a few albums myself over the years. My instruments of choice when giging/jamming are synths. Mostly digital these days. When chilling outdoors around the fire, rhythm guitar.

Lol at you guys . Not that interesting at all really. My era for gigging was the nineties. The bands I played with are long gone and were small time. The only old jamming mates of mine that have reformed again after all those years, and can actually be found on youtube are Antic Hay www.youtube.com/watch?v=myU5oXNH0S4My gigs were all in the Scottish Borders, mostly hippy parties, raves and a few festivals. I dont do youtube, but still have a few copies of my stuff in the van. In fact I got a review from Lenny last year. An old album was playing when he was in my van drinking my brandy. His exact word were, 'Whats this Sci-Fi sh*te yev got playing'? ;D My band name was and still is Micawber Waits. And im still waiting

The piano certainly does. Not too portable for meet ups, but there are those electronic keyboards you can take everywhere.

I have just picked up an old appalachian dulcimer from my sister this weekend, 'twas made by Stefan Sobell in 1973. Seems quite easy to get a pleasant sound out of, and smaller than a guitar to carry in the van.
