Hi. We've just bought an old transit to convert on a shoestring. Over the years we've camped in tents, a Reliant Rialto that we stripped out (including the engine) and used as a teardrop camper, a touring caravan and now we're planning our tent on wheels. We're having the windows and an extra seat put in by professionals but the rest is down to us. Once the windows and seat are in we'll be free to roam even if the van isn't finished. We love the idea of roaming and stopping wherever we choose (within reason) and, being from Yorkshire, we also love the idea of camping for free. Although it will basically be a two person camper we will also have temporary sleeping for our two children aged 8 and 10 (husband's children/my stepchildren) who live with their mother during the week and will come on adventures at the weekends.
Welcome to the forum and to the world of free motor homing. I am sure you will have loads of fun getting the van ready and then getting out there. You don't even have to leave Yorkshire there are some amazing spots in the dales for wildcamping . and the freedom of wildcamping somewhere is fantastic - and as you say free! Prefer that toa luxury hotel any day. Our forum is small and friendly , a lot if us have met up , hopefully you will do too once you get van on the road. Do ask away if you have any questions, quite a few on here have converted their own vans and will be happy to try and help you ps also from Yorkshire!
kernowjon: Hi we nearly always freecamp - old age pension gives loads of leisure time but too little money to pay camp site fees. The van has solar panel, large water tank So we are pretty self sufficient. Jon
