Hi all, Vernon is in hospital and will be for another couple of weeks, here is what he said on FB...
Still in Lister hospital. Am likely to be for two weeks or more. Liver infection needing lots of IV antibiotics and further procedures. Sorry not to keep in touch better. It's a tiny Nokia phone with my old sim card still in and very tricky to reply to texts. I did get your message thx Andrea, and thx for everyone's good wishes and concerns smile emoticon You can all message on Fb or fmuk forum if you want further details, and I will do my best to reply smile emoticon
Wishing you all best wishes for a speedy recovery Vern, thinking of you and hope you start to feel better soon xxxx

..also found some more info on the spring equinox thread so will copy here... March 25th - I am in the Lister Hospital in Stevenage. Everything under control, but they think I have hidden infection which has been getting worse and worse over past two weeks. Causing ever more frequent chills, sweats, nausea, vomiting etc. March 26th -Thanks for everyone's concerns and good wishes xx Hope to be back in circulation soon! Here I am still stuck in hospital. It looks like the infection has responded to antibiotics. Went for CT scan today. Happy spring forward, you lose an hour tonight March 27th - My other phone number (work phone) for those that want it: 07494 486306 If you do text, please say who you are as no numbers/names are saved! March 30th -Am likely to be in hospital for two weeks or more. It needs a lot of IV antibiotics and further treatment but am not in pain apart from very sore chest due to a lot of coughing and retching from original infection. Anyone welcome to message me on Fb or here, but it's tricky for me to reply to texts on my old number for which the Sim card is in a tiny little Old Nokia phone at the moment. Thanks for everyone's good wishes... It means a lot xx

Thanks for the heads up Anne. We knew at the easter meet he was in hospital, but thought it was just for a couple of days. It is obviously now more than we thought. but Vern can now keep us up to date on here and FB. Be good if Ems can do a visit and cheer him up a bit too. .... Tom ....

Gave Vern a ring this evening. He sounded pretty poorly. I rang him this morning but could not get through so left a voice mail. The reason I could not get through was he was very busy having treatment and tests. which I will try to remember best I can. They was trying to get a sample off an abscess on his liver. This abscess moved up from his colon because he had stopped drinking for six weeks and disturbed his body routine. While trying to get the sample they kept hitting a rib which in turn seemed to damage a nerve. This left him not being able to lie down properly. He could only stand and I think it was lean on one side. He could not sit either so a chair nap was a no goer. He is also now very constipated due to various drugs like Warfarin being given to him to try to chase out this hidden virus he has been harboring for some time. He has not slept for 96 hours and doesn't like the hospital food. He is mostly eating banana's and things. Before he got bunged up with the drugs he was the opposite and had the runs, so all in all he sounded pretty tired on the phone. It does not end there has they need to get him unblocked so probably has I type this he will be getting even more treatment which he is expecting tonight. He reckons there is still at least two more weeks in hospital. I probably got some of that wrong but its on those lines. Just goes to show perhaps we should visit the docs more often when not well, because viruses get bedded in and take some shifting. .... Tom ....

You think all's well in life & then it delivers a blow from the left ! Sounds like a proper nightmare, let's hope it eases off pretty sharpish.

Almost right Tom. I will post tomorrow, but contrary to people's perceptions, one doesn't get loads of free time. It is manic with all the tests and stuff going on plus hospital routine, phonecalls and visits etc.
Best wishes to everyone. And for your good wishes too.

Very nice they were too!! Thanks for the visit Ems Am slowly recovering. But the antibiotics will be a long haul thing. Possibly weeks more in hospital, followed by out patients visits.

I hope it's not 'weeks' Vern and they get on top of it quicker. If I can get over for another visit I will but am away this weekend and then on nights for a week so not sure I will have time for a bit. Keep us up to date with how you are.

Hi Vern glad to read the medication is working but hope it's not to long before you are altogether better, was looking forward to having a few beers with you at Kirby. Hospitals can be very boring have you got lots to keep yourself occupied. Keep resting it's what our bodies need when trying to fix them self's. Hugs x

A little update. I gave Vern another ring tonight. I must say he sounded a lot better between coughing and he says he feels a lot better so things seem to be going in the right direction. It will be still a good week or two before he will be released from hospital and then he will have to do lots of outpatient visits until he is better. He will also have to cut back on drinking or even stop altogether but that sounds a bit harsh the last bit. I just hope he is OK for our long Orkney trip in June. .... Tom ....

I think drinking any alcohol, after what his liver is going through will be a big no no, Tom!

I think drinking any alcohol, after what his liver is going through will be a big no no, Tom! True that Carol. Its hell for me knowing that I will have to share what Vern don't drink with you but I have made harder decisions in the past and got through and the wounds healed . .... Tom ....

I'll take whatever advice the medics give me. No reason to suppose I can't have a drink in moderation after the infection is healed. But these infections can take months to resolve so I am not making any plans either way. I am told it is a bacterial infection not related to alcohol. My liver and kidney function are normal. However, not a good idea to give the liver additional tasks whilst fighting or recovering from an infection I would guess

An update. Have been walking down to the concours, up and down a few times and back for the past few day. This has shaken up the circulation and stirred up a few pockets of bugs here and there and given a few midnight shivering attacks but these have been decreasing in severity and last night I thought. one was starting but it never got going and was over in minute or so. It looks like the bacteria in the circulation are getting zapped but as for the ones hiding in the liver, that may still take some time and weeks/months of IV drips and oral medication. But have got my appetite back and am hoping for release some time next week although cannot sit up straight and still very sore and painful in various places as well as internally.
