I for one am gutted at this but it doesn't surprise me. I've seen people with camping chairs and tables outside their vans, even having barbecues on the pavement. They're not just blocking the pavement, they treat the pavement and the area around it like a campsite. I've seen people parked who say they are there for their 2 weeks holiday, and they don't seem to grasp that that's not fair. I've often seen the stains of grey waste running through the gutter ton a drain and yes, I have witnessed people emptying their toilet cassettes over the cliff and indeed simply into bushes nearby. I challenged one couple who could simply not see why emptying 10 litres of raw effluent over the cliff was wrong and I reported them to the company they had hired their van from. I've also seen bins overflowing and bags of rubbish left on the pavement. I also know from conversations that people do a big shop at their local supermarket before arriving, so they're not even using local resources. I think as a long term motorhomer and a 10 year wildcamper, it's motorhomers who have brought this decision because of their own actions. It would be nice of the council could find a spot for motorhomes to park in and provide a simply bourne as they do on the continent, although I suspect as is the nature of local councils they would set the charge prohibitively high even if they did this. There's no easy answer until the arrogant and careless motorhomers themselves decide to change their attitudes.

Hirers are often the worst offenders because it's only for a couple of week a year, and often only once. I used to hire on the canals and the same lack of consideration and regard for others happens there. It's down to human nature and the lack of awareness of other people. Sadly there's only one cure and the do-gooders object to that.

Oddly the day after reading this and posting I got chatting to one of the estate staff from Bamburgh Castle. Recently the parish council have cordoned off the beach facing car spaces so that motorhome can't get in, and put height barriers on the two car parks. They close the Links car park at night, and the main town car park is council run and no overnight camping is allowed. He said they are going to install gates on this too to enforce it. Bamburgh is sealing itself off from campers and his reasoning is that there are people using the dunes as a toilet and children playing end up soiled. Toilets are emptied on the beach, in the dunes and into rock pools. People are parking for weeks at a time and they are parking on the edge where the cliff is apparently crumbling. Grey waste is constantly emptied in car parks and larger vans take up 3 spaces. There is also an issue of generators and engines running at night and rubbish left strewn in the dunes. It's difficult to tell if there has been pressure from local campsites greeding over wild campers, however when I suggested Bamburgh have it's own CL he said this was in consideration by the castle owners for next year. He even pointed out the potential location. Now, he did point out that 8 vans were in the town car park and they weren't supposed to park overnight there. I left at 1am and was back for 8am and there was the same 4 vans at both times so....
So, if you can take his word for everything, once again it's some motorhomers who are our own worst enemies. But then...I along with many others probably already knew that.
