Hope I haven't missed an episode, but what's the latest on the wee car's alternator? The alternator came but would you believe it never had a pulley fitted. They even come new with the pulleys fitted. I had to get the old one off and what a job it was without damaging it in a vice. I tried with the old drive belt wrapped round then tightened the vice but it would not hold. Then I put wood in the jaws and tightened it up but it kept cutting grooves into the wood but would not release. In the end I put fresh wood blocks in the jaws tightened it as much as I dare then got a turbo torch on it and heated it up. The wood set fire,, the old oil on the case set fire, there was thick smoke everywhere but in the end it cracked and I got it off. Cleaned it all up and put it back on the new one. Then between rain falls refitted it to the car and tested it and it all worked fine. The drama was not quiet over because I had to fit the air conditioning back and the brake master cylinder and servo units back. The weather was that bad I had to leave it for a bit. When it cleared up I had to shift the new van shift the old van just to get it out the garden. When I road tested it I hit the brakes at the bottom of the hill on my road and there was none. Lucky for me the hand brake was good. I had only forgot to bleed the braking system. What a numpty .. Must be an age thing. I got Jose to help me do that with a lot of whinging . Well its all done now and works fine. .... Tom ....

So Tom is it iron horse or Tupperware box.Heads Tupperware box , tail's Iron hourse. Well I would like to keep the horse Baz, but the test drives its had brought me back to reality. The none power steering, just turning the corner at the end of the road is a major operation. It feels like I'm a sumo wrestler on a hiding to nothing. The gear change is slow and cumbersome and the stick is all over the cab. You virtually have to stop to get it in first, and you can't rush it. The old engine is quiet noisy too but it does sound like a proper diesel engine. Also it smokes quiet a lot in winter for a minute or two when starting on cold mornings. The plus things are everything works and it has good solar panels on it. It has had lots done to it over the six years I have had it including new tyres. The Tupperware box is so easy to drive with the power steering, lovely smooth gear change. You can even slip it into first while moving with all synchro box. But it has problems with the electrics which look really complicated. Someone has had a go at them in the past and they are far from right. The solar panel is a joke one. Even though the engine is quiet it has an awful tinny rattle with it when reaches higher revs, I think this could be baffles in the exhaust pipe. The answer to your question Baz is I quietly slipped the Horse and his Pony onto Preloved which is where I got him from 6 years ago this coming January. It is also free and no time limit. I have had a couple of inquiries, plus a bloke came round to the house today. He wanted to split them up. www.preloved.co.uk/adverts/show/114106480/talbot-express-25-td-burstner-tow-car.htmlI was going to bring the post up to date If and when I sold them. But I can still do that. .... Tom ....

Hoo b ray. Sense prevails. Can you take the solar panel off the iron horse. How's Josie's arm. Have they Sussex what is wrong yet. I can take anything off but its not worth the work. I have to fill the holes in and strip everything out. It should go off as it is with everything on it. I will be better starting with new ones for the plastic box. Jose's arm is still attached. She is still waiting for more scans X-rays and blood tests. We are both dying with flu at the moment.I go see the vault doctor tomorrow so should feel better for a few hours. .... Tom ....

Sorry to hear you've both got flu - it's sunshine you need ? Hopefully next lot of tests will sort Josie's arm out. Don't go getting her to lift heavy stuff out of the iron horse when you part with it I think we'll be starting to head north next week but after seeing there is already snow at Scarborough I am starting to wonder why. We will see how it goes when we get to Marseille

Sorry to see her go Tom; that's a very fair price for the car as well. A lot of kit on offer there, considering all the additions.

Guess what Vern. I had to get the horse and pony out of the garden to get the Tupperware box in to do some work on it. I had to move the Zaphira first to make room outside the garden. But next I had to move the box to get the others out of the garden. I gave it a run about five days ago then left it on hook up ever since. I noticed all the doors where unlocked. There was no juice in the leisure or engine batteries. All the central locking must unlock if the battery gets low, I suppose to stop getting locked out. I got it going after a while with jump leads. I moved it out the way and the horse and tow car came out. They had not been on hook up and they started no problem, and they had been stood a good while. Admittedly the horse started in a cloud of smoke as usual but it soon cleared. The wiring fault is going to be a nightmare, specially has both batteries have gone down. I also notice the circuits have been broke into and bits added. The bottom of the control panel does not work at all but all its bits its supposed to control do like the fridge and pump. When you stop if you don't take the fridge off 12v it soon flattens the battery and dumps all your fresh water. The pump goes even though its not asked for and if no water in it runs until it burns out. These have been bypassed by someone. If anyone has any experience on these over complicated Italian boxes of spaghetti, any tips will be well appreciated. www.arsilicii.com/public/Documents/AS00039_GB.pdf.... Tom ....

I'm surprised the fridge is not on a relay for 12v. Or maybe it was on a relay which was sticking and they bypassed it with a manual switch? Could have been bodged. Mind you, I think they run crap on 12v and I put mine on 240v or even gas when running. I know one isn't supposed to use gas, but there you go, I'm going to die early one of these days.
Anyway, what you say about modern vans is what a lot of people have experienced. There can be quite bit of power drain when idle. Needs some decent solar set up just to keep it ticking over when it's doing nothing.

It also has auto changeover, so when stopped it should change to gas but doesn't. There might be power drain when idle but this was on hook up and both batteries was full. One major problem when working on it, all the different modules are in little cupboards all over the place and really difficult to get at. When I normally get the engine running everything usually starts to work OK but yesterday it did not do anything for all the habitation stuff it stayed flat. The engine battery charged up and I am going out soon to see if the charge as held. You don't have this sort of trouble with the old uns. .... Tom ....

I have gone moderner, bought a one owner van with 21k miles on it with the lay out suited for me and the other one. Unfortunately it is a bit of an arse with these niggles ongoing all the time. Its a bad time of the year for selling but I may put this back on the market and take the horse back off. .... Tom ....

Most of the modern vans are tupperware boxes though, even the expensive ones I went out to it earlier and engine battery was fine and started it up. I went to the habit battery for a quick look has it was throwing it down and would you believe it was all up and charged. How as this happened ?. I did not put any hook up on last night so the joke soler panel must be moon driven and worked wonders off the stars. I have now put it back on hook up to see if it flattens both batteries again. Perhaps the electric in our house sucks instead of blows. .... Tom ....

At least you could spend more time looking and if you got one you really liked we wouldn't have to listen to you moaning about how bad it is!

I'm still trying to get my head round your electrics Tom!!
Perhaps a dodgy battery earth. I know I'm telling you how to suck eggs and you probably checked it first, but in all the cases I have seen that was a frequent cause of strange voltage readings and intermittent faults.

Hi Tom, There is a lot of people swear by the older hymers, I know they are a bit thirsty but they do go on forever and are built like the iron horse, swap both in for an old hymer.

Do you love the van Tom,.. apart from all the issues? I am no technical expert as you know, but it is starting to sound like it is always going to be a bit of a problem and difficult to work on, and if so I also think you might be better cutting your losses. But if you do love it then its worth persevering. Maybe once you have got it all sorted it will be dream van? I feel really sorry for you, must be so disappointing and frustrating, and hard to know what to do for the best

I know I'm telling you how to suck eggs and you probably checked it first, but in all the cases I have seen that was a frequent cause of strange voltage readings and intermittent faults. I had a quick look today Vern. I have had it on hook up for a couple of nights and at least one day and there was no problems at all this time. Its strange how it flattened both batteries last time I had it on hook up. Perhaps I plugged it into the vacuum cleaner and it sucked all the juice out the batteries. I need a bit of good weather to get into the Nodes that are in little cupboards all over the place to see if I can find out where someone has broke into the wiring and by passed the bottom off the control panel. ,,,, Tom ....

I know what you mean Andy but I am not a big fan of A class motors because of the difficulty getting at the engine parts and things. If I go for another older one I may as well keep the horse because that should be fine now for a few more years. I must say that the box is much easier to drive. It does have one massive problem when driving it though. If you got a passenger its fine but if you come to a sloping tee junction to the left you can not see what is coming from that way. I have put a couple of extra mirrors on that side but its still a massive blind spot. .... Tom ....

I had to make a quick purchase and I don't think I could have done much better than what I got. I had to get straight off to France and Spain in it which was the main reason for purchasing it. I had a couple of teething problems before we went but it then performed without incident for the five week tour we did. When I got home it as just been parked up outside the garden while I have worked on the horses back axle. Now that is complete and also the problems with the tow car all done it will give me time to look into the new one a bit more. Having said that I don't know if the weather will give me much time on it but at least it is usable now. See you at the new year. .... Tom ....

Well its come to the end of the line for the Horse. On the 24 of last month I guy turned up from Hull and bought him and the pony. He went round it all and seemed over the moon with it. But it did have one more kick at me before he galloped off. When I knew he was coming over I went out and tested everything was working as it should. It had hardly moved since about last July so I was pleased it had passed its MOT with an engine mount advisory which I replaced immediately. I got through most things like blown heating, fridge, cooker etc. The very last thing to try was the hot water system. Well would it light would it hell . It kept tripping out no matter what I did. All of a sudden there was a massive bang I thought someone had thrown a brick at it and went out to look. There looking up at me 20 feet away was the exhaust cover off the chimney all broke up and bits everywhere. I had forgot you have to take this off before lighting the water heater. The new van you don't have to do this and I had got used to just switching it on. After six years of taking it off I can't believe I forgot this simple little task. I collected all the bits and glued them all together and put it back on after making sure it still worked. When he came I explained what had happened and he accepted it OK. I told him I would post him a new Flue and cover which I have done since he took it. He said it was exactly what he was looking for and told me he would not entertain anything newer like the one I have got now. I must say I think he is a good judge. He bought and paid in cash on the spot and put trade plates on to take it home. Both the van and tow car have 12 months MOT on them and I hope they have few problems. I thought I would put a few photos of him going on his last journey from Manchester with his new owner. So this looks like the end of an era and brings this long running post to an end. ....
